Thinking of my mom

My mom was never much into anything. She didn't collect anything when I was growing up. However, she got this condo in Colorado and discovered hummingbirds! After that, anything "hummer" was a good bet to make her happy! Now, when I see anything with a hummingbird I think of mom. So, when I was sent this site: http://news.discovery.com/animals/rare-albino-hummingbird-120127.html all I could think of was how I wish my mom could've seen these pictures! There's a lot to commend a hummingbird. They are all smaller than a hand and all have the courage of a lion! They are also beautiful, and this one is no exception! Do you like hummingbirds? or does anyone you love like them?

Isn't is strange what will bring our loved ones to our mind. I know your loss is recent. I wish I could attract hummers, but have been unsuccessful so far. I have strategies for next year as far as what I will plant. Thanks for your hummingbird link. I know you miss your mom.

Mom put out a feeder. I remember shortly after I moved here I was on the back porch and had a close up with a hummingbird - it hovered about 18 inches from my face! probably between 1986 and '89.

What stunning photos those are! I absolutely love Hummingbirds! I wish I had a backyard so I could try and get them to come and feed. I know there are certain flowers that attract them. When we went camping my daughter got a really good photo of one that kept hanging around the flowers outside our cabin. We sat there for an hour or two to get the photo and it was worth it, and not an easy job to do. When I worked at the garden center they use to fly inside and I would run around trying to catch them with a net. I saved quite a few and put them back outside. Once they were in they couldn't figure out how to get out so I would help them along. They are just so precious and weigh almost nothing. Little beauties of the world and a great hobby to pick.

if you had a balcony you could put a feeder out, at least in the warmer months - they are silly little things, I can't tell you the number of times I've seen birds in buildings - seems to me I had a friend here that could catch them with her bare hands... wonder if she's still here...

What a beautiful bird! I've never seen an albino hummingbird and that one is gorgeous. I love those birds but here in Ohio I can't seem to attract any although my neighbor gets quite a few. My dad has feeders out and he and my stepmom enjoy them in the spring and summer. I'm moving back to the Southwest soon and I've never had a problem attracting them there. In fact, if I was out on the porch and the feeder was almost out of stuff they would buzz my head to tell me to replace it!

I'd probably see more of them if I put out a feeder, but the only reason the cats get fed is because they demand it if the bowl goes empty - like it has been lately! **YIKES!!!**

oh i know. mine was into elephants and jewelry. if i see someone really into a lot of jewelry i think of her. anyway, my kids will probably think of me when seeing either papar dolls or Betty boop things. There are lots of humming birds here. i had never seen one up close before moving to az.

hummingbirds are beautiful creatures, however i have never seen one in real life, just in pictures like the ones you showed, i would love to see one, it's funny how little things can trigger big memories of someone you love, i am into cats big time, so if i see any one FB or anywhere else, i automatically think about my cats Max and Dusty,

I never saw any up close and still until my mom had her condo in Colorado, then they'd sometimes knock themselves out attacking her glass door!

Did you read my discussion? Did you follow the link? This was more a discussion about hummingbirds rather than my mom - who I loved dearly, but have lost.

they are a new world bird, they wouldn't last long if blown out to sea - which is how other birds have ended up in strange places...

I know, that's why this nature guy grabbed his kids and went to where the bird was, because they are so rare!

They sure are fascinating to watch..Years back now,I'd visited a Friend who was living at the time in Phoenix,Az...It was the first (and so far, only!) time I was close to a humming bird, flying there outside the window..I've seen hovering insects before, which are cool, but hummingbirds have something more when watching them..

Lovely! That's some fast shutter to capture the wings without a blur. We used to get ruby-throated hummers at my childhood home and it was always a thrill to see one.

Hummingbirds fascinate me. They are one of the few birds that have no natural enemies. Of course when you think about it, it's a given in nature. After all, they are one of the fastest flying birds, they can out fly other birds. They are the only bird that can hover and fly backwards. Plus with the beak they have they can peck another bird or enemy and back off to a safe distance within a split second. I've seen them go after cats and the cats flee in utter terror! I love watching hummingbirds so I am going to plant flowers this year that will attract the beautiful birds. I can't get over the beautiful iridescent colors and the hum of their wings beating so rapidly. They are so tame where I live that they will hover quite close. My Mom used to have hummingbird feeders until they started getting a bit nasty towards my Mom when the feeders were empty. Many of my neighbors feed them with the sugar and water concoction, but in my research I found that using refined sugar isn't good for the birds because of the chemicals and the way that the sugar is refined. It's far better to either have a large garden planted with flowers that are high in nectar content or to purchase the proper feeder filler. My Mom was a huge collector! I spent months going through and finding new homes for her collections. I still have a bunch of her collectibles. Actually it got to the point that she could have been classified as a hoarder! I worry that I may end up that way, so I am careful about how much stuff I amass.

They are fast little terrors aren't they? If I could grow anything I might plant something, but I can kill just about anything! Long time no see! how are you and the brats doing?

Yes I love hummingbirds! I have three feeders filled with homemade mixture that they love and keep coming back for more and more that I find it hard to keep up with them. Even the bees come and try to feed on their feeders but I shoo them away the best I can but then, I found out that bees don't like cooking spray so I use that on their feeders to keep them at bay. BTW, did you know that hummingbirds are the only bird that can fly backwards? Yup! It's true!

Even better to leave the red color out of the mix - the feeder with the red "flowers" is enough to attract them.

Manatees are very shy. I lived in the tampa bay area for 2 years and never did see one! Maybe they are anti social lol

Other than knowing that they're rather lovely of course I've never really considered hummingirds. they're not around in my part of the world, so I'd only see them if I travelled. I have a lovely gold hummingbird pendant though which was a gift from Bermuda. I have a relative who is very keen on penguins. Every time I see a penguin picture or ornament I think of her :)

Thank you for sending the link. I enjoyed looking at the pictures again. Someone else had sent the pictures of the albino humming bird to me a few days ago. I like humming birds, but I think my across the street neighbor likes them even more. They are another one of God's marvels.

I know that the Spanish when they came to the Americas thought the Aztecs (and hence the cultures that preceded them) were crazy for eating the hearts of hummingbirds, but the those tiny birds have so much courage they will attack larger birds to defend their food. Only bees give them pause!

I love hummingbirds! They are extraordinary little creatures! I have actually only seen a real one once and it was so quick that I questioned myself as to what it was. I have plans on getting a feeder this Spring in hopes of luring a few to my back yard so I can get a look at one. I would love to watch them.

Good to see that you love your mom, Same to you I miss my mom a lot though the difference is is that my mom passed away 3yrs from now Its so sad having not to see my mom that's why my advice is to love and care your mom very much ...you don't know what you'll gonna miss when she's gone and there's no way you can make everything as it is used to with your mom around

I lost my mom a year ago last November, and I miss her all the time. I do know what you mean, that you can't make it like it used to be when mom was alive, and in some ways, she had been gone for a while before that - because the strokes left her so disabled.

Hello elicbxn, I think hummigbirds are one of the most fascinating creatures that God has created, because they are one of the only few creatures that can maneuver themselves while steady on flight they are great.
