Is it rude to wash the dishes while your guests are still in your home?

We have dinner guests quite a bit and I'm never sure what to do in this situation. If we don't clean up some of the dishes we won't have room on the counters to serve dessert and make coffee. But, I don't know... is it rude to leave your guests to put some of the dishes in the dishwasher? I try to still converse with them, as they are in the next room.

The dishwasher can be quickly loaded while you are taking the dirty dishes into the kitchen. I would never consider that rude.

There is nothing wrong with cleaning up a little while you have guests. Just make certain that you follow a few guidelines so that you don't come across as being rude. First, always make certain that your guests needs are taken care of first, their glass is full, they have something to nibble perhaps. Try to stay within their sight, invite them into the kitchen to chat and keep you company if it is just a few close friends. If you are having a big party, make certain they have drinks, and perhaps some music. Keep going back to their area, to make sure that they know that you haven't forgotten them, and continue talking to them whenever possible. If you don't have a dishwasher, leave the dishes to dry for a while. Once you are ready to serve dessert, let your friends know what you are doing and again make certain that their needs are taken care of. If you follow these simple guidelines, you will be able to have a clean kitchen, and guests who know you take pride in your parties.
