actually you can install both OS in one partition windows will let you select what OS to use if you want to do this just install both at the same partition then go to run type msconfig boot tab
then you can see everything there :) you can set a timer for you to be able to select whatever os you want to use :) and now you'll be exploring one of the advance parts of your computer cheers and have a nice experience
and the answer to your question is No you also need to install the drivers for your XP have a nice day

First of all.. you can work with one OS at a time.. I mean if you want to play games you need to restart your laptop and start with XP.. if you want to work with windows 7 again you have to reboot your system with Windows 7..
Second thing.. you can't install windows XP directly over Windows 7.. you first need to install lower version of OS (i.e. windows XP) in C: drive and then you have to install Windows 7 in another partition..
there is also another option to use virtual image.. you can install windows XP in your system just as a normal software.. though not so simple..
if you are using windows 7 licensed copy with professional or higher version(Enterprise or Ultimate).. go and download http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx it will allow you to work with windows XP in virtual mode.. if you are not running with this configuration.. download and install vmware. and in that make image of windows XP.. it will run both OS together and you can play in XP mode while working with Windows 7.
:-)
Good Luck..

A lot of games and programs that are compitable with windows 7 because it has a windows xp mode without having to partition the hard drive and run two different os's on it. While it's possible to have two os's on a particular hard drove, it takes up way to much unessary memory just for gaming. So I suggest you find an XP mode, or check the game against microsofts compability service. Windows 7, will have a link to the compability center and you simply search the game and find out what system requirements are needed to make it work.
