In our college, our undergraduate director has allowed us to see our ranking every semester and since there are about 100 students in each course students get really excited to see how their rank some feel happy but others are depressed. If you were studying at our college would you care about your ranking?

Those who feel depressed are totally serious about rankings because they want to see themselves at the top of the ladder. It is also sometimes based on how they are pressured by their families in being at the top. I guess it depends on the student if he or she is easily affected by such things.

I agree but as to how I would feel about it...generally, I wouldn't care considering that it's just a number but if I got into the top five, I'd be happy but then again wouldn't anyone? You don't have to be totally serious about the rankings to get depressed over it. I mean who would want to be the hundredth person on that list?

You know, class rankings tend to be a purely cosmetic thing a lot of the time. I just kept my eye on my grades and I did well enough. Perhaps that is just me and where i went, I think that there were other factors that went into class rankings beside grades, but obviously your college will in fact vary a lot of the time. I didn't really pay that much mind to it to be honest with you.

I would a complete hypocrite if I told you that I don't. Of course I did in those days because I want to to be the best, at least in my class or in any kind of group or population. Seeing your name up in the list is a rewarding experience if you really worked hard and you're aiming for a good grade. The praise from others, especially form parents, friends, teachers and others are just a bonus, if you really want to to achieve something academically.
In the future, I will look job in a resume but it does guarantee anything when applying. But it is a reflection on what you are as a person, in extension as a student and/or a future employee.
I know that competition in terms of academic achievement or ranking is tough and sometimes, crazy. You can take it in a good way or a bad way.Being in a ranking can inspire you to do better, push yourself to the limit and give everything you got. Or if you're on the top, it might mean you need to have some down time and some self-reward. Anyway, rankings are just temporary, what you learn by earning them can be useful in the future.

Hi paopolar,
During my school days I worried alot about Rankings but when I come to college I never bothered about the rankings. But the news is I got low ranking in schools where I studied for ranking, In college I get good ranks where I greatly went into learning more things than studying for exams.
So don't bothered about rankings just learn for knowledge.
