I am trying to come up with new craft ideas, and I am toying with the idea of doing soy candles. I did some research online. but I figure I might get better information here. If you make soy candles, would you say it is profitable. What are the pros and cons of doing soy candles?

I know someone that does....and she does wonderfully at selling them but she does several craft fairs a weekend...having her family go to different areas to sell them.....I haven't tried soy candles though.....my daughter made regular ones out of wax to sell at craft sales but they didn't go well.

Soy candles can be awesome to make except you will not only need the soy wax. You will have to decide how many fragrances to make and colors, also there are the jars, bottles, etc you would need to invest in and also all the wicks. The larger the size jar you may need more than one wick. Otherwise the flame only burns in the center and melts the center of the wax.
I quit buying jar candles with wicks for that very reason I was wasting money and not getting my candle to melt all over before the wick would not light anymore.
A cheaper alternative you might think of is candle tarts.
You can do them in soy. you will have choices too as to style you want to make, colors, and scents.
Here is a website where I purchase a lot of my candle tarts and she sells candle jars too so it might at least give you an idea of helping you decide.
but I have to be honest once I found out what candle tarts were and I get no waste for my money, I have never bought a wick candle again. I have a tart burner in my bathroom that emits fragrance in my bathroom and bedroom.
I put a black cherry bomb fragrance in the bathroom this morning and before I left it had actually filled the bathroom bedroom livingroom and kitchen/diningroom.
So I did not even put one in my livingroom burner.
You will also have to learn what fragrances are lighter and do not give a lasting fragrance to some that can give you bang for the buck.
A lot of people judge a good candle and candle tart by how the scent radiates.
I am a bakery type person and fruit type fragrances. there are only a couple floral that I like but then others could be complete opposite of me.
Here is the website I have just placed an order with her for candle tarts.
hope this helps you learn a little more and spend less in making the product.
Need any other information add me as friend and just message and ask questions.
I owned my own business for 25 years and know how to figure out personal small businesses like this.

The issue with the wick not lighting my daughter was complaining about the same thing today she had the same problem with many unusable candles.
Very helpful information, I really appreciate it. Your information will help me determine if this is worth my time.

Thank you for best response. I ran a successful ceramic business. I poured molds, cleaned them then decided whether to fire first or use underglazes. It all depended on how I saw the piece finished. We even used an airbrush on our ceramics.
I am sure candle tarts for you will be less time consuming and and less wholesale price. Check out Etsy that also sells items by crafters and ebay for candle tarts.
you will never get rich doing crafts, but I managed to clothe and entertainment for my 5 children as they grew.
Hope the site I gave you let you kind of give an idea of prices. but as I said check the other two sites to get ideas between container candles but I would never go back to them. I love my candle tarts LOL
