You usually could turn those captions off. There are actually two types of captions. Closed and open captions. Open captions, well, you can't do anything about those. They're embedded on the movie or show itself. Closed captions are what we usually see on most shows and movies. These can be turned off. Just check the functions of your TV set. Captions are primarily required for the hearing-impaired people and for those who are not native speakers of the language used in that show.

When I watch those Spanish episode, and Spanish made movies, I have to read those captions really fast, or sometimes, I have to backward the whole section once again to watch what the actors did. Gosh, it wasn't easy, but I was so curious at the same time. I gotta know what they said, and I gotta see what their expressions were.

Yes, most movies shown on cable TV usually have captions. It's okay if the films dialogue is not in English, it helps us to understand what we are watching. But if we understand what the characters are speaking and there is caption, most of the time we don't understand what we are viewing because we are distracted by these captions.And if you are a slow reader you will be left behind by the scenes of the movie aside from the headache it may give us because we are tempted to read it if we saw it at the bottom.

That's the best way. The actors, scenes, music etc. are mere shadows of what the human minds involved are trying to manifest; so what you're doing is actually what the purpose of all the production is ... the producers want your mind to see what their minds see (which is the REAL beauty of the production). Besides, with practice you'll learn to see what you need to in the peripheral vision (either above/below the words or below/above the action, whatever your mind feels is most/least important )

I guess it usually happen to everyone when the movie we are watching has captions or subtitles.I think it is better to turn the captions off so that we can focus on what we are watching.

I do not like it when people put closed captioning on the television either. It is really distracting.

I learned how to read caption/subtitles from animes. I can read fast enough to be able to check out what the actors (drawings) were also doing. It was more of like glancing at the root words and then it would just form the sentence in my head. It comes with practice though, because I've noticed when I haven't watched subbed anime in a long while, it takes me longer to read and understand. Anyway, for english movies or tv series, we have the option to turn the subtitles off. And that's what I do. It is indeed distracting from the movie.

...that is the reason why I prefer an english dub Japan anime movie rather than japan sub title. It is difficult for me to read the whole caption and sometimes, I cannot follow the character actions on the movie because all the time, I focus too much reading captions on TV. It really gives me a headache, but time goes by, I learn to appreciate it, but still I prefer to see the movement of the character on TV rather than reading captions on TV.

*LOL... I do like yours! My husband wants it off but I want it on. He said it's better to watch it, hear and understand it alone than just read. He's right! I just use the caption if I just can't understand the accent delivering the dialogue. I feels your headache too reading the caption :P ... I cant enjoy the picture so, I turned it off...
