I kept thinking about this quote. Honestly I kinda not agree on this or maybe I just don't understand this that much. Do you follow this? What can you say about this quote?? For me I want to disagree to this quote because you have to respect others first for you to be respected. I mean if you don't respect me then I will not respect you.
What about you how and when do you respect others?

respect is something you really have to earn. it's not something you could easily squeeze out of someone. you have to deserve it. that's why people need to respect themselves first in order to be respected in return. It's a give and take relationship.

Hi angelbelle, I think you just answered your own quity...Respect
is earn not just given...of course if you don't get respect you
are most likely not going to give respect...
But that just what the "respect is earned" means...those who give
respect earns respect to the highest count...it only when you don't
get respect that you are most likely not respect back...
I think respect is very important in ones life...it really makes
for a much nicer society...

It can be both. You can have respect for a stranger by being concerned for his well being. For example, the respect others have for victims of disasters. On the other hand, would you think highly or honor someone you don't even know? After you get to know them, it may turn out they deserve no respect. They must show honorable behavior. That's what it means to earn respect.

I guess there are numerous way to earn respect , one of them are the hate and love respect and other are paid for the respect and some are fear respect.Respect mean they aknowledge your presence and give your due knowledge of your presence and not be rude infront of your maybe due to yo ur influence, fear of your or admire of your skills or possessions.

What you mentioned is quite similar to the discussion title. When you are respected by someone and because of their respect for you, you in turn respect them. They earned their respect because they respect you first. I totally believe in this quote. Look at the people around us. They have done something in their life to have earned that respect. Thing is, respect is not something that lasts forever. You will have to be consistent or show something different in another aspect to keep your respect. If you do not do so or have done something negative, you will lose that respect your earn. Much more, respect is hard earned and easy to lose.

I will treat or approach people with respect (respectfull) but it doesn't mean this will be never ending. I do believe respect also has to be earned. You can't just demand people show you respect no matter the way they treat you. I think this is what the expression means to say. Respect has to be earned but that is not the same as approaching someone respectfull.

I think earning respect means that have to be carrying yourself in a manner worthy of respect. I mean, we cannot expect people to respect us if we're doing disrespectful stuff like say we act pompous and arrogant or we belittle other people. People respect us for being true and honest and humble. Even if you're the richest and most powerful person but you brag about it, people would still not respect you. That's what I think earning one's respect is.

Naturally it is earned. There are many people for example who are in positions of power. They have the power to make or break your life in various reason. However do all of these people command respect? No, they lead by absolute fear. They are the type of people who tend to bully around people who are lesser than them, not because they have to, but just because they can.
There are times where respect is something that can be earned slowly overtime. However one moment of weakness can really cause someone to lose a lot of face and a lost of respect. Granted, respect is not hard to gain and easy to lose as something like trust. There are times however when people tend to rather not back up their words or try to lead through fear, then that is not worthy of respect. Most can become worthy of it, but many are not.

What you said is what exactly what the quote is about. "Respect is earned" just means that respect is not for everyone. You only give it to those people who you think deserve it and one of those people would be the people who respects you in return.

I would say it's better not to make others do not like them, not what you do not like you. People are so different, so beautiful and interesting in their diversity, that is very difficult (and wrong) to take that for granted that you do not like you, not like any others. I think respect is something that comes naturally when you love life, people. I do not think it's something you earn, but something that can be lost. If you meet for the first time, I feel respect for you as a human being, without you doing something about it. If you start to step my values in your feet, you've lost this respect. I think that respect for others is best seen in contradictory discussions. If you can make an exchange of opposing ideas, with a respectful attitude, is excellent.

Yup. Respect other for others will respect you. thats true. But then, is it the same as respect is earned? i mean, you respect others, so you earned others respect. am i wrong? Other ways, if you treat others well, you earn their respect. If you work hard in your life and contribute to society, you earn the citizens respect. For example, the government. If they do well, people respect them. Wont it be called respect is earned? :D haha.. that would be my point of view. Hope this helps.
