People in Europe: coping with low temperatures

During the past two days it's been sort of a trending topic on Spanish TV, both in weather forecasts and talk shows, and all over the media, the upcoming freeze travelling from Siberia across the European continent.
They talk about temperatures of 25 Celsius below zero at 1500 m above the sea, and -5ÂșC by the coast. Personally, I've heard little about how the countries where the freeze is already at are coping with the negative temperatures (other than streets and building covered with several centimetres of snow). It's very odd to see snow over the Mediterranean, so I'm a little enthusiastic about it, but I'm aware that snow is not always welcome over the mountains and the inland.
So, how are you people in the Northern countries dealing with these cold COLD temperatures?

Some of these countries are experiencing the coldest temperature on eastern Europe in this centruy. It is no kidding snow is getting thicker by the hour, it is like the ice age is coming down hard on them right now. Wow!! It is really tough for these people living there, can't imagine how one can survive under such a harsh weather. It never been that cold before.....

I just read an article a few seconds ago in fact about how waves have frozen over in Europe, it's gotten really really bad now, I pray for them...lampposts are covered in ice. Thousands remain trapped in snow in nearby mountain villages. So sad to hear of this disaster.
