Today I was reading an article about unusual food from around the world. I was surprised to see that a dish from my own country was mentioned in the article. It is a Danish dish called "oellebroed" and it consists of rye bread and beer. You divide the rye bread in small pieces, boil it in a pot and add beer and a few other things. When the dish is ready you eat it with cream.
In the article I read about many other kinds of unusual food from other parts of the world. One the things they mentioned was fried spiders in Cambodia. I like to eat the local food when I visit another country, but I don't think that I will be able to eat one those spiders when I visit Cambodia.
Which unusual dishes you do have in your country? Do you like that food? Have you eaten any unusual dishes when you have been abroad?

I already mentioned before that I am Half Filipino, Half Peruvian so yeah I mentioned about the Guinea pig meat from Peru and the duck fetus egg before. But I will share things you may be able to eat from Philippines and Peru.

Phillippines
Cheddar Cheese flavored icecream-This is a very popular in the Phillippines. I dont know why its popular though, Its like eating a salty and sweet icecream.
Alakon or Birch flower- Its a tropical vegetable, that looks like green worms, or it may also remind you of a green haired person who decided to have dreadlocks, cos it looks like dreadlocks. Its a delicious vegetable for stir fries.
picture of a birch flower: http://www.clovegarden.com/ingred/img/mb_alokon05f.jpg
Kwekkwek- hard boiled quail or chicken egg, coated into a batter (with anatto powder to make it orange in color) and deep fried. Its delicious actually and you can do this recipe in your place.
----
Peruvian
Cebiche- Its like the peruvian's answer to sashimi- Raw fish marinated in Lime juice and chili's . if you have some spices, raw fish, corn and lemons in your country, you can do it on your own.
Anticuchos- Its barbecued Beef hearts.

Yes, I remember that we talked about the guinea pig meat in another discussion Cheddar cheese flavored icecream that sounds very unusual. It could be interesting to taste that. I don't know if I would like it, but I would still like to taste it. I looked at that the picture of the birch flower. I does look like green dreadlocks
I think that you have many vegetables in the Philippines that we can't find in my country. In some shops we are able to buy vegetables from Asia, but they are very expensive. It was also interesting to the food from Peru, I had never heard about those things before and it is always interesting to try something new.

I can't open the link, but I don't know if it is because of my computer or because there is something wrong with the link? It sounds like a delicious dish, but I can imagine that is it is hard to cook. I am not that good at cooking, so I think that it would be too hard for me. I am surpriced to hear about the alligator meat in Louisiana. I know that it is possible to meat alligator meat at other places for instanse in Vietman. I read about some tourists who visited Vietnam and they bought alligator meat in Hanoi.

I found some pictures of relyeno. It looks delicious, but I am not an experienced cook, so I think it would be too difficult for me cook that kind of dish. I have never eaten crocodile or alligator. There is one restaurant in my country where we can buy meat that we don't usually find in my country like crocodile or snake, but I have never been there and I think that the food in that restaurant it very expensive. When I visit Asia I want to eat some of the food that isn't available in my own country, I think that could be very interesting.

Hi Porcospino! oellebroed sounds really different. First off, I don't know what a rye bread is. But if given chance, I might want to try it
I am here in the Philippines and we have a food called "Balut". It is a duck egg with a baby duck already formed inside it. When you open the balut, you will see the actual baby duck. You would see its head, beak hands and feet. You would even taste its pee. The duck pee is the sauce of the egg. I know it sounds yucky and terrible but it is really delicious. Foreigners usually try balut when they are here in the country. But those who does not have a strong heart and stomach do not dare it. The trick is not to look at the duck while you eat it.

Hi Porco, there a few dishes which cooked using crocodile, turtle or deer meat, which for me considered as unusual food in my country. Because i am usually only consuming chicken, duck or fish meat. So, i never tried tasting these type of meats. Besides that, they are considered as very expensive meat, since they are very rare. I might want to give it a try to taste your unusual food, when i have the opportunity to visit your country in future. Will reply your email soon.

I can introduce you to some of the local food when you visit my country Oellebroed is one of the dishes, but there are other dishes as well and some of them are very old. I have eaten deer meat before, it is not the most popular kind of meat in my country, but it is not that rare either. I have never eaten turtle or crocodile. There is a restaurant in my country where we can buy crocodile meat, but it is expensive and I have never been there, I have have only read their menu. I love to eat the local food when I visit another country, and I think it is interesting to eat food that isn't available in my own country.

I have never been abroad, but there are "unusual dishes" that I have found across the United States. It seems that depending upon where you go and what nationalities have settled in a certain area not to mention what is easily found in the area and the evolution of the culture the combination of factors can lead to some foods that are interesting and generally not found in other areas of the nation.

It is interesting when you are able to buy food from different nationalities. Some of the foreigners who live in my country have started restaurants and in their restaurants we are able to buy food from their countries. I love to visit those restaurants, and I enjoy eating food that you don't usually find in my own country.

There are a lot of weird strips and colour food. I believe those are Veges ,or they look like one at least. That would be unusual for me. First time seeing such food. I have never heard about yee sang. It is possible to buy some kinds of Chinese food in the Chinese restaurants in my country, but there are relatively few dishes to choose from and a lot of Chinese dishes are impossible to find here. One day when I visit Chinese I want to try some of the Chinese dishes that aren't available in my own country.
I am like you, I like to try new dishes and sometimes I don't like the dishes that I try, but I still like to try them just once. I once visited an international restaurant in my country. I ordered two dishes that I had never tried before (a starter and main course) and I didn't like any of them but at least I got a new experience.

I know what tofu is, but I have never had the chance to eat it. Only a few shops in my country sell tofu, in most of the shops you can't find it. I have never heard about smelly tofu, I don't think that we have anything like that in my country. We have quite a few Chinese restaurants in my country, and I like to visit them, but they only offer a limited number of Chinese dishes so I would like to try other kinds of Chinese food when I visit China.

In Greece, we eat sheep brains and intestants. Amongst others. I think that would be a big No for some people. :)
