It depends on how you say such words. Yes, it is insulting but sometimes those insulting words can open up our minds to improve more for the better.

Yeah to say idiot is very easy and not always meant bad, but it can really hurt people so you have to watch out when you say it. I say it to often like you guys said in the oh my god variant. I hope i can reduce saying it a bit.

I do actually think that idiot is a word that you shouldn't use, because people could be offended by it. If someone is acting the goat and doing silly things that they could stop themselves from doing then that is alright to call them an idiot, because it is their choice to act that way and they have the chance to change. However, if they cannot help doing what they're doing, for example if they're not very good at school or at college, then you shouldn't call them an idiot because this might not be something that they can help at all.

It depends on what situation you are, if you hanging out with some friend and a friend says to you idiot because you let fall a pizza on the ground. Than i totally can understand why your friend says that, but there are also situations where people really getting hurt if other people say idiot to them. For example if your boss come to you and everyday say you are an idiot it isn't working nice any more. But it also depends on which people you say that word, because some people are just very sensitive to insults.

This word is actually a Greek word, which means "professionally unskilled person", but after a long time it is using as abusing word, which is considered a 'rude word' in the present society.

Wow! hehehe "PROFESSIONALLY UNSKILLED PERSON"! What a title! Do you think they need to officially certify that or some kind of test to attain that status? A F1 driver is a "professionally skilled driver". You and me who are not involved in car races are "professionally unskilled drivers" - in other words, an "idiot" driver.

I have an aunt that is scared of going to other countries. Once we were out shopping a a man said how would we like to win a trip to France. My aunt said no way and she would pay not to go. I went to visit her again shortly after my trip around the world. She looked at some of my trip photos. She said "my dear you are either very brave or stupid". I think that the word idiot would be far worse. Idiot is indeed quite a rude word. It is not as bad as an actual swear word. There is a program on TV called "An Idiot Abroad".

Rude is definitely a rude word. I also hate when people use the word stupid. I know that I slip up sometimes and say those words too and even though I mean it as a joke I know that it is still offensive. I think it is just demeaning no matter if it was a joke or not.

It depends on the situation and the tone when mentioning it. If you mention the word with anger then it means rude. But if you mention the word with joking tone, then it's only a joke. Besides, it will be rude if you say it to someone who is not close to you.

Yes, I am very sure that "idiot" is a rude word. Idiot means an utterly foolish or senseless person, according to my dictionary. So the word can not be put to use without the intention to insult, unless the person who gets it is really what the word means. If that person really is, he/she won't feel anything as he/she is utterly foolish and senseless, and hence, no question of rudeness or insulting.
