When Learning typing on a QWERTY keyboard, the ASDF keys are what's known as the "Home" position for your left hand, while JKL: is the home for the right hand. the ridges (Which would be under the forefingers when positioned correctly)help you to adjust your fingers correctly for this, even without looking!

I have to admit "Proper" typing is a skill I have yet to learn..I don't think I have the patience to go through the exercises required to condition myself to use it!

Well they are there for reference purpose only. They help the user while typing work without making it necessary to look down on keyboard frequently.:)

You are supposed to put your left index on the F key and the right index on the J key when you type. That's what they are designed for... but I never do it cause it's pointless for me. If you go into the field of technology you will probably learn to type this way. So yeah that's basically all it's for.

When you type, you have to know where the keys that you need to press are located. With these ridges, you have available clue even if you are not looking at the keyboard. The forefingers should press the R, T, Y, U, G, H, V, B, N keys aside from F and J that's why having a clue where the forefingers rest helps to type the said keys.

It is for blind typing to know where you are on your key-board. I can't blind typing but i can understand why it is a good thing for people who do. Because other you are typing totaly wrong if you do all letters 1 to much to right or left. But i didn't know this until a few years, before i didn't even know they were on my key-board. But i also did never get type lesson orso.

They are there so you don't have to look at the keyboard and handy when most of the keys are just one colour given that the type letters have been worn off like mine have.

If you are a touch typist, these are the 'home' keys on which your left and right index fingers should rest (when they are not being used for other keys).

hello masta, As far as I know, the ridges on the key F and J are for holding your forefingers of the right and left hands in place when you are typing. That is the basic position for a beginner to start learning to type:) I guess this is the reason, but I might be wrong. CheerS!
