An Earthquake Happened Here In Our Place

Philippines

Hello there my fellow myLotters! I would like to share about my thought on what's going on here in our place. I'm residing here in Tacloban City in the Visayas Region Part of the Philippines. We were so bothered with what's going on, because on January 17,2012 at 9:00 p.m there was an earthquake happened with an intensity of 5.9. On February 1,2012 at around 12:00 p.m. there was an earthquake happened with an intensity of 5.0. and lately, on February 4,2012, there was an earthquake at around 9:09 p.m. I'm really so bothered with this. As I visited the website of Philvolcs. The normal earthquake especially here in our region is only 2 earthquakes. But then, It has been the 3rd time. People here in our place is so paranoid about this earthquake. Why does it have to happen?

craziestqueenever, you're not alone in your fear about earthquakes. In truth several quakes and tremors have also been felt in Catbalogan. Besides advice coming from fellow MyLotters. here's the most important step you can do to erase your fear of earthquakes. Send a message or e-mail PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE OF VOLCANOLOGY AND SEISMOLOGY (Phivolc) to request for a map of Tacloban where faultlines are indicated therein so you can at least tell if your house is in the faultline or not. You can likewise log in to Phivolc website to read their news about places in the Philippines hit by a quake with its intensity. If interested, just type phivolc in your search bar. I hope this helps.

That's a good suggestion. I would also take your suggestion into consideration for me @nicanorr, thank you! The plates must be moving underneath us here in the Philippines. I felt one of those quakes too! It's best to know the safety preparedness when you experience earthquake. Since I've spent my childhood in Japan which is prone to earthquakes, we usually had an earthquake drill at school. The way I recall the safety preparedness is: House scenario: First, when you feel the quake, open the door, on a worst case scenario you don't want the door to be jammed if it was left closed when it happens. Second, turn off the circuit breaker for the electricity and the gas line to eliminate any hazard. Third, go under a table and hopefully it has a big and sturdy table top to be your protection. Try not to move and go anywhere until you are sure that the quake has stopped. Always be cautious after the quakes because there are times that if the intensity is big, there is a possibility of an aftershock. Please be safe and learn more safety precautions for you and the people around you.

Hi, fortunebee and queen! When calamities like that of Typhoon Sendong struck, there's not much that man can do. It's God's wills. But let's not lost hope. We're all God-loving and God-fearing people. He's on our side and and being sinless, HE knows how to protect us. Just keep calm. Always be prepared for any eventuality. Alway have a handy medicine kit ready with basic medicine, matches, flashlight, cellphones, cellphone or telephone Nos. of hospital, fire and police department, PAGASA, Phivolc, etc. Very important. Always have presence of mind and never panic. fortunebee- kudos for posting basic preparedness tips on quakes. I will try to remember and put it to practice. Yes, doors and windows during calamities should not be jammed. See you next time. Bye! queen- Samar and Leyte which is linked by Marcos Bridge is ours forever to behold. We owe it to Almighty God for giving Marcos the vision to have it constructed.

Because your region is located near an earthquake fault, you are more likely to be hit by an earthquake compared to other regions. It's better to prepare for the worst and keep a cool head than to not prepare and panic.

Good. I'm not as worried since the last earthquake we felt in our province is 4.7 and it was last October. What is more of concern to us is the typhoons. Have a great weekend.
