How can I form a community online?

Hi mylotters, I have always want to form an online community and to be the administrator or the leader of that community. I know that I am going to form one around something that I am definitely passionate about, even though I don't really know what it is yet, and if possible, maybe I can forum several online communities, whether it is a forum or people that keep coming back to a website, or whatever. The problem with this is that I know there are a lot of communities out there already, and it is hard to find members for a certain group if there are many other groups that are passionate about the same thing. For those who are experienced webmasters or just newbies who sometimes see how a site could be better if you were in charge or the changes you would like to see on a website, to those who are loyal members to certain sites... Are there any tips you can give to someone like me?

To host a forum or a community can be an great ambition, and it is a great, and hard - working project. First, you must research what would lead people to come to your communities, and join the group, and you must have something attractive to majority of people to keep on coming back. That is base on my opinion. For instance, mylot is a great community. Some people base on the money reward incentive, so they would spend hours per day in mylot, while others find it attractive because the freedom allow them to post whatever they want, and then other members can interact with each other, because of the related situation similar.

Thanks for your comment. I know that there is a lot of hard work involved but I think that the rewards far outweigh the negatives. :) I really don't want to base my community around money (like mylot), so I really need something special to keep people coming back to my site.... when I get one.

And once had a website. It really took a lot of my time. If you don't want to put in all these hours, it will be difficult to succeed. But if you are willing to put in a lot of hours, I do have some points for you to start with. 1. Find a specific group of people you want as your visitors (mentioned before) - Why? - Because, (and this is my opinion) the site will look more clean, with fewer options for the user, that's something I find attracted with a new site. 2. Get some extra features - Why? -Because, look at mylot, they though have A LOT of discussions about everything, and I know that's against my first point, but then they offer the user, money for being active. That's a great feature. Try find something similar. 3. Find an easy and short name - Why? - Because a long different name will never be remembered first time a user comes to your site. 4. Get some critics from outside - Why? - Because the possibility for making mistakes ARE big. Like writing a novel, you can read it again and again without finding the mistakes, but when your friend or mom read it they'll find a lot of mistakes. I'm a bit tired, hope you know what I mean.
