Is it not a good idea to respond to older discussions?

Recently I noticed a few members discussing another member who was responding to older discussions. This morning I saw 3 discussions that really sparked my interest however when I got ready to respond, noticed they were 6 years old. My choice was not to respond. Maybe this is something I don't understand. Is there something wrong about responding to older discussions? Would appreciate your opinions and thoughts. Thanks, carolbee

You can respond to any discussion you like. The discussion you saw was complaining that this person was reviving discussions which were against the Guidelines and should have been deleted. When you respond to an old discussion, it appears in the list of 'recent' discussions and so can attract several more responses. This is a good thing, of course, if the discussion had some value in the first place (as it certainly does, in your opinion, since you want to respond to it). The only small problem is that the person who started the discussion may no longer be active in MyLot and so you may not get any comment back from them. However, what it important is that you are posting your views and, after all, someone else may want to continue the discussion with you ... discussions are a 'free for all' and you get paid for whatever you post that is of sufficient quality.

I would like to add, It was brought to my attention by a friend that it may encourage one that has not been real active to get back "with it" and become active again. I know it did me. I had not been answering to much, mostly because I didn't really understand the rules of MyLot very well and this friend reminded me it was ok to respond to my two year old discussions and they became revived for a short time earning me a payout. I got the payout not because the discussion got responses but because I went back and responded to what others posted.

i think it is ok. i have been here for a number of years and still get responses to questions i have asked in the distant past. but i am like you, i also hesitate when i see a discussion that old. often that member that started the discussion is not an active member anymore.

I have too and never gave it another thought. Someone fairly recently commented about the craft discussions I posted with photos. These discussions were old. I responded to the member and appreciated their feedback. Thanks for your response.

Hi Carolbee, I am one of the complainers of this person. NO it is not wrong at all to respond to older discussions. The point that we have been discussing is that someone here is pulling up old discussions that should have been deleted long ago. He is commenting at length on these discussions . Don't worry, Carol. You are finee posting to older discussion

From what I understood, it's not advisable since it would affect not only your earnings but those who had responded in the past too. I'm a bit confused about this and wondering why this is the case. I mean, we have new members or old members that have been only active recently that weren't able to respond to a past post. This is a discussion site too so I feel that if a topic is still active, that myLot admin hasn't removed yet, then members who haven't made a comment or responded to it should be given a chance to do so regardless how old the topic is. So I'm also waiting for someone who could also enlighten me on this.

I was and still am confused. I really don't understand why an older discussion would be an issue unless, like one member mentioned above, that discussions about computers and other technology would be out of date. That I understand. I also thought no matter how old a discussion is the member responding would be credited for taking the time to respond. Thanks for responding, beamer88.

The recent discussions regarding older discussions being revived is because someone here is reviving older discussions that are against rules. Old discussions are perfectly fine. The ones in question weren't fine even when they were new and somehow were missed and never got deleted.

@ beamer: You say 'it's not advisable since it would affect not only your earnings but those who had responded in the past too.' We ONLY earn for our own activity here therefore the earnings of others would not be affected. If we respond or comment on older discussion then WE will earn for our activity and not anyone else. The user who started the topic will only earn if they come back and comment to us but we will earn regardless, if our response/comment is worthwhile.

So far all responses have been positive to older discussions. I can see where a recent post is more accurate when it comes to things such as computers, etc. Thanks for responding homeshoppers.

When the subject of discussion is has still its gravity I would like to bring alive an older discussion. When the same subject is started as a fresh discussion a lot repetition may occur. So I think it is not a bad idea to respond to an older discussion.

I totally agree. I have been a member for a long time and will never respond to a discussion, old or new, if I have no interest. It's not about the money in my case. So if I run across a discussion that sparks my interest, I want to respond. Thanks for responding, mohkanari.

I was surprised that someone responded to some of my discussions that were 4 years old. but if the person can add something or take my zero responces away from the zero area, that's fine with me. You know the song, "Everything old is new again." If a discussion is that timeless, I think that's pretty neat. Glad you're back on. Haven't heard or seen you in a long time.

Guess I lucked out with the topic. My discussions don't generally have this many responses. Am lucky to get just a few responses. Thanks for responding writersedge. I've been here off and on. Been doing other things online also that keep me busy. Take care.

I've never seen a rule saying we can't respond to the older discussions. I'm of the opinion that if it opens up for my eyes to see that it's there to be responded to!!! On the days that I'm suffering from myLot block & can't think of anything to say, I often type in a random keyword in the search just to see what discussions pop up. I don't think to look to see how old the discussion is before I respond. If it interest me, I respond to it!!! I know I responded to a particular discussion of a friend of mine here & I received a PM thanking me for restarting his discussion!!! Once I responded, it had opened it back up & others responded also; so he earned a little more off it. I look at it that if I have something to say on the subject, I'm going to respond. If the OP has left myLot & doesn't comment back, I'm out of nothing as we're only paid for what we ourselves say!!! I received a response on a discussion I wrote 2 years ago just a few days back & I did reply with a comment & this person commented again & a dialog was born; so my old discussion became active once again & helped to earn my a tiny bit MORE!!! So, if you feel the urge to respond, I'd say GO FOR IT!!!

I've had this happen where an older discussion was, so to speak reborn. I posted a picture and made a discussion about a particular craft. About 2 years I received a comment from another member. It was fun to be reminded about my earlier post. The post I am talking about this morning that I found to be really interesting was 6 years old. My better judgment told me to back off and not respond. Maybe I should be more realistic with my blonde attitude...lol Thanks LadyMarissa for responding with such a good response.

same question is in my mind! well, i hesitate responding to old discussions especially if the last response is already a long time ago because it seems that nobody would read my response anyway. it will be useless to post information. i don't know if i'm correct.

I sure thought the our responses were credited to our account even if the discussion was old or the member not active any longer. I always respond according to my interest. Am sure I've responded to older discussions before I noticed it was old! Thanks for your response, eunife.

I understand your experience. There are more discussions around that are very interesting but are very old. I was not able to check most of their date though and responded to them accidentally and only became aware that they were old when I noticed the green font on the left side of the screen that screams the date when the discussion was started... I don't think responding to them are illegal...I don't think I've seen such a rule that says otherwise in the FAQs...

i find nothing wrong with it as revving old discussion is also part of earning. the only questionable when the older question revive is a violation to the guidelines which not been taken down during the year it get published, so far, replying to older questions is good and every one get an opportunity to learn from it and give their best comments.

I just respond to the discussions i like and i don't really look how old they are. But i respond more to recent discussion because they are in the top of the page, so i can see them easy. But I think it is better to respond to an old discussion than start the discussion again. To start a discussion again is only necessary i think if there changed very much about that subject in the last years. For example if you want to read about the best computer you can better start a new discussion.

It's actually better to answer older 'discussions' well, older 'discussion-starts' anyway; I like to think that the 'discussion' isn't really "started" UNTIL the reply is made ... in which case, you never actually join an old discussion; you start a NEW discussion, no matter the age of the 'start' you're replying-to!

Hello Carolbee, Its not a bad idea to revive an old discussion if there is something still we can learn from it.I also noticed some 5~6 years old discussions appearing in "recent discussion" tab.I usually don't respond to the old discussions because i have noticed that there is no one to comment back on my response.

Thanks sjvg. I guess there is the risk of the member not being an active member any longer to respond back to your discussion. But some of the older discussions are good.

Personally since we get paid for any discussion we respond back too, I have responded back in an older discussion and have never felt Bad about doing so, especially if that member is still active. Since I am also still playing catch up in my discussions giving Best Responses, etc. it actually excites me if I see someone responding back to something older.

Thanks for responding KrauseHome. I do like to respond to older discussions when I have time. As far as giving best responses to older discussions, I get lost in the shuffle since I forget to get back to that particular discussion.

Someone posted a discussion here a while back about going back and making a response to EVERY discussion that's ever been posted on Mylot. If the discussions are still being hosted on the site, and have not been deleted, then they're available for discussion to all users at any time, regardless of the date they were posted. It's only an issue if the subject of the discussion is no longer a viable subject, say it was about a query for information about getting to an event that happened Years ago, or the Best response for that discussion has already been chosen,(if you only wanted to join in where there's a chance You might get selected.) If you can't find a new discussion on a subject, look in the older ones..that IS a good idea, instead of ignoring an already started older discussion on a subject..

Someone thought they could actually go back to the conception of myLot and respond to all the discussions? That would take a year or longer working constantly. That's interesting. Thanks for responding, ShepherdSpy.

Thanks for bringing this question up. I always wondered about it. I love mylot and wish I had more time to spend out here. When I see a discussion that I would like to respond to, but don't have time - I do save it for a later date. I do have some discussions that are older and felt funny about responding to them, but now I know it is okay, as long as rules are not broken. As I tell kids that I work with no question is silly or stupid.

I really never gave it any thought until I saw a comment on myLot from another member about older discussions. Thought I was doing something wrong or in violation of the guidelines if I responded to a much older discussion. Thanks for responding, kimbers867.

There is nothing really wrong about responding to an old discussion. I believe all discussions posted here at myLot are categorized as active. So whether a discussion is 5 years older than the others it is still active and can be responded by anyone who gets interested with it. I myself have been responding to old discussions actually because I found those still very interesting to me. There is no rule in mylot that says we can't respond to old discussion. The mere fact that mylot is still publishing them means they are still open for comments so you can always respond to them and you get paid just the same provided you give a meaningful and substantial response.

I think there is no wrong unless the article is regularly responded by any members here that is why the discussion is in rotation to attract members to share ideas about it again...

I would take it as a compliment if even one member went back through some of my posts and responded even if it was 6 yrs. ago. The particular discussion I was referring to is still on the site however it looked as though the member hadn't been on myLot for over 60 days. So I didn't respond although it was a subject matter I had an interest in giving my opinion. Thanks for responding, gloryacam.
