Life begins the day you are born and, since then, everybody should do the best to aproach well his/her life.
Further to the age of 40, many people get to this age and start with a kind of depression, as they realize that they are not 20 any more. Wrinkles starts to appear, someone maybe starts to see worth and needs glasses, in the men the grey hair may start to appear, women already think about the menopause.....many changes.
But it doesn't mean that you have to live worth (no reason for depression). There are only biological changes.
On the other hand, you have more experience in many situations and themes, at 40 you won't do what you did at 20, but the life goes on and you can live with the same happyness and energy or even more.
So Life begins at 40? No, it begins the day you are born. Maybe another kind of life starts at 40? Yes, as you get other kind of thoughts, problems,.... but life goes on at 20, at 40, at 60....

Oh, this is a saying that has a complicated origin. It involves history, psychology, anatomy and even popular songs :) But in general, it has something to do with life expectancy in the past. Apparently, people on average don't live past 40. But I guess with the various medical breakthroughs, this is no longer the case. Well, that's how I understood it :)

You are correct. That doesnt mean you have your life when you reach 40. Maybe for some it does because of their experiences in life.

My little sister turned 40 last week. For a while she acted as though her world was ending. I think it may be a way of letting people know you can enjoy life at any age. People should know that they can make the most of whatever age they are!!

I am approaching my 38th birthday in a couple of weeks and I can say with all honesty that I have had a full life thus far. My opinion is that life begins when we are born and every moment matters. I don't believe that life begins at 40 and if it does for some people, boy have they missed a lot. The saying was probably made to help people to accept aging with dignity.

Life begins when you are born. It is living that eludes most of us. To really live for the moment and planning for the future is not something that will come naturally to most of us.
It is good that you are happy and contented. Don't worry about sayings...afterall, they are just sayings.
Be yourself.

I don't mean to frighten you, but at 23, I think so much of your life is ahead of you. And what I mean about 'your life' are all the trials and tribulations that you are still to face. At around 40, you'd be able to survive all these trials, and hopefully learn from them. If needed, you'd be able to live your life inspite of all these things which will be now in your past. And then you'd really be able to enjoy your life, and start living it (at 40).
I think...

Growing old is a better off experience than several of us visualize. Young persons like to relish themselves, but this frequently means behaving in ways that can harm their future wellbeing. The damaging effects of liquor, smoking and poor nutrition and fitness are well known, but several young people still drink, smoke, elude eating fruit and vegetables and fail to do consistent exercise. It’s vital that young people understand that they can still relish life as they get older. As long as they make energy to look after themselves, there’s no purpose why they shouldn’t look forward to a happy and satisfied old age.”

The day we were born has nothing to do with the phrase "Life begin at 40". The true meaning of that phrase is that "it is at the age of 40 that we start to find meaning in our life". You may think that you do have the best things in life, but as we reached the middle age period, our perspective in life will change. It is a the age of forty that we find life to be much better. If you reach that age, you'll know what does it really mean.

life begins when your born, i don't believe in all that life begins blah blah blah, life is what you make it and the roads you build on the way, i am over 40 and nothing has changed, the only thing that did change was the kids grew and left home, but i still see them all the time. we only get one life, once it's gone it's gone, so my belief is life beings when you gasp for that first breath after birth, after that it's all systems go

hmmm. just a thought. according to the theory of erik ericson about the stages of development. this is all about generativity versus stagnation. This is the stage that we begin to wonder about life and give a try to what we want to have before we grow old. If we are unable to be stable at the stage. We can be having problems later when we are older
