CPUs doesn't or rarely fails, but most of the times it stalls becaus of heat, it might even give you BSoDs due to over heating.
Check the following:
1. CPU Fan
2. CPU Temperature
If the things above are all good, then it must not be the CPU, you should check the for faults:
1. Operating System
2. Memory Modules
3. Hard Drives
4. PSU
5. Mother Board
Good luck trouble shooting your PC. :)

It usully takes longer time to save your work and to open a file. That's the sign. It's not because of the processor but of the hard drives you have that has caused it.

when your CPU stops functioning normally or there is intermittent disruption such as lagging or hanging of the system, the processor could be one of the cause. But processors are quite stably built as compared to the other parts of a computer and rarely does it has any problems. Problems that would affect it significantly would be heat if not fully well-ventilated and insulated.

When you have a bad processor, you will often find the signs written on your hard drive, many of the files will have their size attribute altered to 666, some times you will receive pop-ups containing the word "livedehtpihsrow". Occasionally your computer will sneak out and mug little old ladies, then come home with some flashy new USB device and no explination of how they can afford it.
However I suspect that is not what you mean.
The most common symptom of a bad CPU is the good old system hang, this is very common in computers which have been over-clocked and is due to the CPU getting too hot. The CPU can also get too hot if the fan is failing or clogged full of dust. A failing fan often buzzes, a clogged one just doesn't work very well. If you are getting errors only when you try to do a lot with the computer it's probably a sigh the fan can't cope, is it the right fan for the CPU ?
