Why some people wear dark clothing at night while walking on the street?

Every night going home there are always somebody walking on the side of the road wearing all black. Where I live is pitch black because there's a lot of trees. What is wrong with some people? Don't they know walking on the side of the road wearing black at night is dangerous. There's sharp turns and there's no side walks. It doesn't help the on coming car has bright lights and there's less visibility. You don't see them until your right on them and if the driver is not paying attention the person walking can get hit.

Ya I know it's dangerous, I myself dont' travel at night but Hubby's mother does and I always get after her for wearing her dark clothes. She just says she carries a small flashlight and is always peeking around and is very careful. She hates light clothing with a passion, so that's why she wont' wear light clothing.

hi Masilu your mom could buy some reflective strips that fasten on to her dark clothes when she walks a night. drivers will see the flourescent strips and know a person is walking there.

True. Wearing dark colored clothes especially black make it hard to notice someone even at a distance. You can also become very suspicious if you meet a person looking like that at night.

To me, I only changes my clothes after i have a shower or bath. So if I wear dark clothes in the morning, I will also wear them in the night until I have the shower and go to bed. It is terrible for other people when i wear in dark during the night, for some time they can not see me clearly. But wash clothes is a hard task for me, so i try to change as less often as possible.

hi blkqueen My friend Nelda and I were discussing this same problem as she was driving me home and we came within inches of hitting this young man on a bike, no headlight on the bike , no reflective tape and he was wearing black clothes. If we had been driving faster or Nelda had not seen him at the last moment we would have hit him for sure. my son rides a bike but it has headlights and reflective tape and he wears a jacket with luminous panels on it that really stand out . He also always wears his bike helmet too. there is no excuse for people to wear dark clothing in pitch black night in areas where there are no sidewalks. light clothing with maybe something reflective could also help the motorists to avoid hitting these walkers.

I would suspect that they're up to no good. If they wanted to be noticed, you'd think they'd wear some reflectors or something of that sort. I'd honestly relate it towards some sort of crime or something unless they just aren't thinking before they choose their attire for the night! Hopefully they don't get hurt for being careless. Unless they're homeless, then I could understand it because maybe those are the only clothes they have available, in which case, my heart goes out to them.

I wonder the same thing. It's dangerous. I see walkers and bikers in our area riding early in the morning also before daylight. Sometimes these walkers have reflector vests on their shirts but others don't. All a driver has to do is take their eyes off the street for 2 seconds and it may be too late to correct a car veering to the right towards the pedestrian. My opinion is these folks can figure out a time to walk or bike during daylight hours. I'm all for exercise but not when it's risky.

People put on clothing in the morning when it is light. Their coat is a particular color like mine is blue. In the evening and night when it is dark they don't know their clothing is too dark to be seen by drivers. A cyclist wears a bright yellow jacket and this can be seen very clearly indeed. The people should have a jacket like that to keep them invisible and safe.

I don't think people honestly think about such things. All they know is that it's the path they need to take to get where they are going. If they had half a clue about safety they'd wear a light color and some sort of reflective gear so vehicles can see them better.

I don't get it either. The only thing that I can think of is that that is what they we wearing during the day and they were caught out much longer than they thought they would be to say the very least. There are just times where as it gets darker and people are rather going to be caught out at night, wearing all black. Either they did not plan out something very well or they did not want to be seen. Of course, not being seen when crossing the road in the middle of the night, is not a good idea. As there are many crazed drivers on the road as later as things really are going to get to say the very least. There are just going to be many times where I just wonder about the thoughts that are going right through the minds of most people.

Oh. That is dangerous. Maybe there some people do not know that it is a risk or they did not know that it is dangerous. It is normal for them to wear black and they did not even think that it is dangerous. We cannot tell them not to wear black in the night because for them wearing a black is normal.

haha i'm guilty of this. but there's a really good reason for this. i usually hang out where crime just might happen and finally declare myself a superhero by swooping in to save the day. still waiting for that to happen :-)

Maybe they are not smart enough to realize the risk of wearing "all black" at night in a dark road that has no sidewalk..

I have mixed feeling on that one, it seems like they are up to no good. two it seems maybe they didnt know they would be outside. three maybe they just are the kind of people who dont want seen or they dont want people thinking they are up to no good so they hope no one sees them. I agree it is very dangerous for them to do this. With all the children that have been getting hit by cars while rideing there bikes you would think more attention would be brought out to this subject in the news and so forward.

I'm not fully sure I understand it either. It can certainly be very dangerous to wear all black at night.
