Tsunami Panic

In the recent earthquake that hits us last Feb. 06, 2012 high tension and speculation rises as whether tsunami will occur after that. Arrogant people began yelling that they saw the water raised up plus there were text blast regarding tsunami...Ordinary people of course don't have a clue and idea what were the possible reasons for a tsunami occurrence so they panic and they ran as fast as their feet could carry them...some of them went to the mountain areas just to avoid such disaster...I think if we know enough about tsunami then maybe we could avoid such panic....so i need some facts and information that everyone of us should remember. what are the possible reasons of tsunami occurrence or possible reasons that tsunami will not occur?

I had never even heard the word tsunami until a couple of years ago when there was a big one I think it was in Bali but I could be wrong, but I read when that happened a little girl ran along the beach telling people to get off the beach so I guess she must have learnt all about it at school maybe...it would be a frightening thing to go through, very scary.
