If you work around sick people a lot

It will eventually catch up to you. I had to be relieved early last night, and I am off work today because of a stomach virus. Clients and staff at my workplace have been sick, some of them numerous times, since before Christmas. I leave it to your imagination, but it involves losing it at both ends, and stomach cramps and headaches and body aches. I usually am immune to this, and in fact, I think the last time I threw up before last night was about eight years ago. I feel whiny and miserable today.

Oh, one doesn't have to work near sick people, just living with someone who works or goes to school outside the home can bring illness in. I am just now feeling better after a horrible weekend and first two days of this week. Mine was a head cold that made my head feel like it was in a vise and I could barely get out of bed, though I did force myself to read one paragraph of my schoolwork Monday, but that was all I could do..Today I am busy catching up, got my poetry done and working on my Communications and History today..Then I will work on my Art reading this weekend..:)

I seem to miss out on the head and chest colds, I guess with the flu shot and so forth I have a strong immunity to those illnesses. I am not around the stomach flu as much anymore so I am not really surprised that this is making me ill. The bad thing is my job does not allow for taking time off for illness, especially since I am still on probation. Carmela, I am sure you are right, some of the illness just comes in on the family clothes.

Oh thank you Jill, I am feeling A LOT better. Like I said, Monday all I could do is get one paragraph read, and I had to reread it yesterday just so I know what it was. The worse of it was Sat though Mon, so then superbowl is kind of blurry in my mind, I remember making food and eating it and some of the plays, but really, the impact seems to come to me in a dream state because my head was so achy. But now it went from a head cold to a chest cold, I sound a lot worse, but I feel so much better and getting a lot of work done..

I do hope that you will feel better soon. we have a similar sort of bug going around too and some of the apartment owners where I work have also been stricken. fortunately I work in my office alone so I am not likely to catch anything from anyone. However, I do have a fragile stomach as when anything emotional happens then I am losing it literally from one or both ends Get well soon. Have been losing it from one end for the past 48 ours due to a family drama. But don't feel to talk about it. It will get worked out and then I may post

I used to have that nervous, anxious stomach thing going on. It finally got better. I was chalking the discomfort up to anxiety earlier this week. Boy, was I surprised, I was talking to a supervisor about an issue with a client, and I just lost it. I hope your drama gets better.

I am not a social person, and prefer to make money doing my own thing. In my case it's everything from little things like MyLot, to big things like promoting the book I published in 2005. However, there are other ways to get sick. My husband is on some crappy (pun intended, because that's what it makes him do!!|) medication, and it's a good thing I'm not sick, or we'd be fighting over a toilet! haha I am feeding him the BRAT diet (Banana, rice, apple sauce, toast) to help with the crap, and keeping gatorade and stuff around to keep him hydrated.

Sometimes I think we can ward off getting sick and then it just seems every 5 to 10 years we finally catch something and then we are sick for a long time. Hope you feel better real soon.

Yes, when it hits, it hits really hard. I have not had this kind of illness for about eight to ten years.I sure am hoping that I am flushing it out with all the liquids.

This time of the year is always bad. I don't know what it is with our systems. People like us rarely get sick but when we do it is bad or serious enough to end us up in the hospital. And then there are others that get sick all the time. Hope you are taking vitamin C as well as the liquids. I take double the dose of vitamin C through cold and flu/virus seasons. Feel better.

I don't work any longer, but when I did it was always a problem. On one hand you don't want anyone else getting sick. On the other hand, you might not get sick days and don't want to risk losing the money. I hope you can get a lot of sleep and feel better soon!

I usually do not get this sick, but new job, new germs. I already had more overtime than necessary to cover my work on last pay week, which ended yesterday, but I have to get my forty hours this week, which begins today. Luckily, I feel much better.

I'm sick too. My daughter was sick and still is. I've been sick about 5 days now. If you are around sick people very much you are bound to catch something. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

I am sorry it seems like you are having a rough time. I am much better today, and well enough to work. If I do not work, they will take my days off away next week to guarantee that I work forty hours this week. Our weeks begin on Thursday. I have three days off in a row, and I am looking forward to them, plus I need to train at some of these locations so that I will be able to work alone in them. I think anxiety has a lot to do with me getting sick this time.

It sure was awful last night. I felt like I was going to pass out while I was waiting for the person to come in and relieve me. I am much better today, but I have a headache, and lots of gurgling sounds.

I don't blame you..it's been a while since I had the flu...a couple of years. I hadn't had it for 26 years before that and that is when I had the Hong kong flu. I had it so hard that I had to crawl to the bathroom....so I think in some ways I built up an immunity. I work around the public too...but where we work we wash our hands twice then use sanitizer and for a couple of years no one has gotten the flu....hopefully you will be over it soon!

I think that I just have not been exposed this thoroughly for so long. The clients are hard to get to wash their hands. Then of course they touch everything. I get my flu shots every year,I remember what the flu feels like. I believe I had the original "swine flu" and so I feel like I have built up some immunity.I think changing the strains regularly gives us an added benefit from our shots.

I do hope you feel better very soon GG. I suppose you build up immunity to some things, but there will always be something that catches you when you are exposed to bugs on a daily basis.

I think this is a self limiting problem. I have eaten very lightly today, and I hope I am better tomorrow, as I need to work my shifts or they will take my days off away next week. I had overtime already this week so it was okay that I stayed home today.

That's why I'm pretty much a compulsive hand washer--and am working on turning my boyfriend into one as well. One of the best things you can do is wash your hands. Drink some mint tea. It will help settle your stomach. Hopefully, you will be feeling better soon.

Hey, I bet I know you from Gather. I have never had tonsilitis. You cannot work in people's homes in close proximity and not get exposed. I carry sanitizer in my pockets, and I wear gloves for many things. I eat lots of fruit and vegetables and take boat loads of supplements. I feel like this job has stolen my work out time from me. I am going to honestly say that I will not be keeping this job any longer than I have to to get the bills paid off.

I think that I'm probably more... um... cautious than you regarding that. My boyfriend says that I'm a germaphobe. I'm okay with that... After a first-ever bout with tonsillitis last year and spending pretty much all of my time (an entire year) in Florida feeling miserable (I'm allergic to everything there), I've become more determined to avoid getting sick. That means hand washing, avoiding shaking hands if possible, eating a healthy diet in order to boost my immune system, trying to get more exercise, etc.

It's the one thing I don't miss about being out of work..catching the "lurgy" as we call it over here. You can't quite pinpoint what the bug is so that's why it's called the "lurgy." Never used to put it down on sick notes though lol. Hope you're feeling better my friend.

Oh dear... All I can say is take some rest, drink lots of water and fluids and also if it starts getting a little severe, consult a doctor. I have been suffering from Ulcerative colitis since more than 11 years now (and it was diagnosed only in 2005) Though medics claim that there are no known reasons, I am quite certain that I might have caught it at work and or travel as I was a frequent traveller those 1999-2000/1 years.

I am resting today and I am eating a light diet, Gator ade, soup, oatmeal, etc. I am sorry about your ulcerative colitis. They seem to still be at a loss to solve the mysteries of intestinal problems. I know that they are now giving antibiotics for Ulcers, but I know that is not colitis. I know a man who is about one hundred years old, who has found that he does not have a problem with his stomach if he restricts his diet. I believe he has ulcerative colitis as well. He eats plain turkey meat, frozen peas, peeled apples, and oat meal, that is all. Everything else makes him have problems

It is true. The kids bring all their illnesses to school. I sometimes feel sorry for teachers. I used to be pretty resistant to this but I think the stress of the job made me susceptible.

I never had that. Only if I work with people with a lot of problems or who are mentally ill it will have effect of me. I will be out of energy. Which is why you mostly are forced to quit for some time doing the job. They know it will infect you. I wish you a good health.

You are very right. If you work with people with mental health problems it is very draining. You need to make time for yourself and take time off to re energize. I am in a position where I am working both with people who have mental problems and people who have physical problems. I can do the work, but it does make me tired.

I think in some ways it is easier to keep some locations disinfected and to keep space between you and any customer who might be ill. I am glad you are staying healthy. I think since you have kids you have been exposed to almost everything and have some immunity. I am better today, but feel a bit weak. I will go to work today.

You're right I probably have built up immunities because of my kids. I also never got sick much as a child. I did not grow up in an extremely clean environment and my schools weren't clean, neither were most of the other kids in the schools.. so I think I was exposed to a lot of germs as a kid that I've learned how to fight off. Most of my kids have pretty strong immunities too.

It is hard not to get sick when you work in close contact with people that are sick often. I use to work in the mental health field providing one on one services for children & adults with mental retardation, developmental disabilities. Our company had 4 group homes and several clients that still lived at home with their families. Working in that sort of environment it is hard not to catch some sort of bug. I hope you feel better.

You are right, that is the population that I am working in. In addition to having a weakened immune system they all live and work in close proximity. There are lots of soap and hand sanitizer dispensers, but they do not all use them often enough.

I started this job right before Christmas, and the employee who was training me had come to work sick. So sick she had to go home. In my opinion that started it, and until we can get some fresh air in to clear out the germs and everyone gets completely well it will keep going the rounds. I have people who tell me they wash, when I am pretty sure they do not. I feel lucky that I did not get sick sooner. I have pretty strong resistance.

For the higher-functioning clients (in my case), it was difficult to get them to wash their hands appropriately. It was just not one of their priorities. They did not understand/care that hand-washing is so important. Of course, sick employees were often times just as bad.

I am sorry to hear that.It sounds as if you got acute gastroenteritis which is usually due to eating the food with pathogenic bacteria unlike respiratory tract infection.I wonder whether you have a meal in the cafeteria or not.

No, I bring my own food and drink to work.I throw out old food. It is not a cafeteria type setting, but home kitchens and I do not eat the food that belongs to the clients. This is a virus, many people, living in different homes, working in different situations are having it. I am sure that the surfaces they touch carry the virus.I am constantly washing surfaces but you can miss things. I believe I am stressed and so caught this virus. I have not been sick this way for at least eight years.

I hope that you are feeling better by now. I am thankfully very healthy and usually do not pick up things going around as far as physical illnesses. But I live in senior citizen housing and well over half the population has all kinds of health issues. And they talk about it and they talk about and they talk about. They never stop talking about illness. And they never get well. I think they make each other sick and sicker by the constant reinforcing of illness. Maybe if they stopped talking about their aches, pains, medications and doctors, they would begin to feel better. I have told others that the most dangerous words in my complex are to ask someone "how are you"? I avoid stopping to talk to most of the other residents. I am always friendly and say hello but keep going.

I know how that goes, I have worked in nursing homes. I work with adult mentally handicapped and many of them have health issues. They can talk about it to great length as well. You have to do healthy things, and think healthy thoughts to be healthier.

Agreed. I think that if some of these residents would stop talking about themselves so much and stop complaining, they would begin to feel better. If they would just do positive things and think more positively, they would feel better. Maybe it is easier to be miserable. Maybe that is what makes them happy. The happiest seniors in my complex are the ones who work or volunteer or keep real busy.
