Ipad or Not to Ipad, That is the Question.

Where i live there is a debate whether schools should buy ipads for their students. Of course, the schools want to keep up with the latest technology with new computers, smart screens etc, and i think ipads are a good idea.
HOWEVER, i feel with an ipad for each student, good old fashioned writing on paper and even words spelled correctly will fall by the way side. For instance, my 18 year old is a horrible speller and that is probably due to texting for the last 6 years or so.
Thoughts?

If education authorities are so strapped for money that kids have to pay for textbooks,I'd like to see where they're going to get enough to issue Ipads for free..I was reading an article saying UK MP's in Parliament would like to get them too (at public expense) so they could "save" on paper..and in another article,I read that a Creche facility set up for them (Guess who paid?!) only catered to about 17 youngsters over the course of a year,so that it cost about £30k a kid in that time..Maybe THEY got "Free" Ipads to play with...

Another issue here, apart from the expense of the machines (not to mention their fragility!) would be the issue of buying textbooks in ebook form for them. There would be a similar technology initiative in Ireland to bring in ebooks as textbooks (not sure about which platform they are recommending),but the problem is that while taxtbook purchases are VAT exempt, ebook purchases are NOT! so,with the present system, you have to pay firstly for the ebook reader,be it kindle, ipad,or laptop, and then take your lumps with the taxman as well...the tax issue is generating dispute and discussion..it remains to be seen if anything will come of it..

Well, I know a lot of parents considering getting their children a Tablet which is cheaper. My husbands job went to a Tablet now for work orders, etc. so I guess schools are bound to do it too. I guess if there is a way to make sure kids are still learning and able to spell, etc. this is a Great idea. Especially since things are more computer oriented as well.

Today people depend on the digital stuff so much and therefore we lose some ability, such as the writing. In my opinion, I prefer young students to write by hands much more. As it is the best time for them to write by hands. As to the senior students, it is alright to use the computer, iPad etc. to write or do their homework.

I agree, I don't think it is a good idea for every student to have one because they will not learn how to write properly and it will affect their spelling as well. I like what my son's elementary school does, each classroom has a few Ipads, and each kid gets to be on them once maybe twice a week for about a half hour. That way they learn about the technology but it is not their main learning source, and their whole education is not dependent on them. The Ipads are more of a fun extra learning tool rather than a replacement device for education.

I am old school. I grew up in an age where we had to practice our writing, and we had to spell correctly or else get low marks in our school work.
Yes, it's great that the iPads on students would lead them to more possibilities. Or to other creative avenues, but I also hate the fact that writing neatly and even spelling correctly would become lost arts. Such a shame.

I don't believe that iPads are necessary, but at the same time, some people may find them easier to use and carry around school. Using an iPad and having an external keyboard to go with it is a lot lighter than carrying around a laptop. Although I feel that writing notes can sometimes be more beneficial than typing them, I've also discovered that the pace that classes are taught at my university is fast (since it's a quarter system) and to get really good notes to look back on I should type them. I'm a whole lot faster at typing my notes than I am at writing (70wpm vs 50-60wpm). So I guess my point is that iPads aren't necessary, but can be useful if used properly.
On a side note, I personally don't think that texting leads to bad spelling. My brother doesn't text that much and is a horrible speller. I text quite a bit, but I'm a fairly good speller. And if you think about the past, there have always been bad spellers before texting came around.
Just had to mention that. My inner social science researcher came out. haha I think I took one too many of my research method classes. (w

I think the same as you....I also feel with too much technoloby that kids are losing their abiblity to use their imaginations....everything is done for them so they don't even have to think anymore. I agree they need to keep caught up on what's new...but they also have to know how to use their brains.

I think you are so right. as it is, my grandkids can not read a regular clock nor write cursive! so many things have went out of learning. we need to go back to some of the old ways.

this has been the problem now a days. because of the hype in technology like mobile texting, correct spelling is being sacrifice. in our country we have this jejemon. they are texters (mobile users) who have some different ways to spell words they are sending through message. its funny and weird at the same time. but no offense meant, but it should not be taught to little children as they maybe confused on spelling when time comes.
anyway, you can have an ipad but still we should forget the old style of learning like using pen and pencil, and papers in copying the teacher's note on the board. it's a practice for a child and enrichment also.

I say go for ipad I also been thinking about it, I already applied for iphone4s on plan but then the more reasons about getting one is for blogging and reading and do some online earning like mylot.
I have a blogger friend who never use her laptop after getting ipad she does everything about in it. But I choose to opt for iphone because i already a laptop at home and the service provider here don't offer connection on ipad. I think ipad could help your child in school, he wont need to bring books and notes to hurt his back in carrying it.

I think that there is nothing wrong if students are going to use ipad or anything teche, that will help them to increase their learning. I know there are some negative impact about this, but if they can afford and make things easier then i think it's ok. Technology is evolving and it's evolving really fast. Lucky for me, i experienced the old days. And i think that student's should also be responsible for it.

well i agree with you on this. This is great since they can correct spellings using the ipod, they can install programs that are very educational. And ipad companies will also be force to make educational programs since this will be of great demands. These could be a little bit expensive but if its for the good of education of future student then it would be nice. Some students are also poor in hand writing that teachers sometimes fails to read if what the students are writing are correct or not.

My writing, that is hand writing has always been bad even before typewriters, so that it would have been hard to see the mistake unless I printed out the words. And when I wrote, it took so long that now I know why in the olden days, some authors wrote two books in their lifetime. I do think that with ipads, that they are a good idea, but a school should not get the latest model - maybe the ipad 1 or when the ipad 3 comes out, the ipad 2 and not the 64 mg with wi-fi but the cheapest model.
After all, when schools got Macs, it was not the top of the line.
I do think texting all the time is bad, but I do think that with a computer or an ipad, you can see the mistake you made. It is just I am worried about the expense. Maybe the school should ask the parents for a nominal cost since I believe that an ipad is not for everyone.

In my opinion, I think most people still use iPad for games. And you know it is quite easy to be addicted to playing the games. Not everybody can take advantage of the iPad to learn. So I think it is still better not to use iPad in the school.

iPads are just not necessary. Laptops or at least a desk top computer are. I don't have an iPad but the whole idea of it being touch-screen does not entice me in like it might with others. I think a laptop is definitely necessary for college but not an iPad - plus that would probably make tuition hike up way high.
