I'm currently broke because I miscalculated.
I had too many expenses last month so I listed them all down and budgeted my salary so I could pay all of them. When my salary came, I had a lot of extra money and I was overwhelmed by it so I gave a lot to my mother as my share to the expenses in our house. I left some for me which is enough until I get my extra salary.
But what I forgot to count was to leave extra money for my school expenses! I had an unexpected expenses at school and I have to use the money I have left for myself until the next pay day. I should have allotted allowance for my school expenses. .

Like what you did- list all the expenses (the daily and regular expenses)
I always have the list before throwing extra expenses.
Thu sometimes we did some miscalculation- and it's fine (we learn from it)
I am sure you know the next step so this won't happen to you again aint?

Yes! I'll leave more extra money for myself. I'll be careful not to forget other expenses and I won't be too excited to give too much money on something.

Yup - I do the same thing. Just have to learn to budget well and stick with it. There are always unexpected expenses, unfortunately :(

There is a role and equation for anyone to control their money, and also have a part for saving. All persons and private employees with a steady income, the only thing who can control are their expenditure. So, try to divide that expenditure to three parts with the following percentages 50% for what we need, 30% for what we want and the remaining 20% for saving. What we need like House rent, electric, water and telephone Bills, School fees and Prices of food and beverages. what we want like Entertainment, which should be without extravagance and optimize Eating outside at restaurants.

Fixed bills such as school fees and rent housing is what we can not control. Therefore, we must control the value of water and electricity bills through the rationalization of consumption. As well as the reduction of eating in restaurants may help.

That doesn't work for me. If I split my money up into 3rds, I'd not even be able to buy enough food for a month for my family. Half of the money I make a month on my social security goes to feed my family... the rest goes to pay bills ... it's a rare occasion that I ever get to spend money on me for my wants.

We all make mistakes sometimes so I hope your not being too hard on yourself. I think that even though it might be a struggle until your next paycheck, good things will happen for you because you give your mother what you did.
I usually have the same bills every month so there are very few surprises. I do, of course, have them from time to time and I try to keep a little something back for that.

I just tell myself that at least I was a big help to my mom, so yeah, I am not being too hard on myself. Just on my wallet.

We work on setting aside something every month so we when we do get those surprise bills we can pay them and not be broke.
I have a list of all the bills that go out monthly, and how much they should be. I also have a list of things that go out irregularly like my trash is every three months and set aside a bit each month so I will have the amount when I need it.

I also set aside extra money but that time, I thought my extra would be enough for any unexpected expenses. Turned out it wasn't enough. .

I think the way you are managing your money is a good way, just make a list of everything you need to pay, including a category for 'extra expenses', just in case something like that happens. I usually do a table of expenses with the average amount of money needed, if there is anything left I will save it for the next month, but keeping a bit for personal use.

Very carefully.....I don't have alot of bills at this point though....and most what I have it paid for....but I still pay attention to putting some in savings or into investments.....I keep a certain amount of cash for myself to spend....which it sounds like you did too.....sometimes things just come up that surprise us!

If u had miscalculated this month, i'm worse than u as i'm not calculating all this time at all.. lol Most of my bills are often left unpaid till the following month. It's like a case of rich for a month and poor for the next. lol I'm lucky that i didn't have to deal with any emergencies where i have to get one lump sum of money. Should that day ever comes, i would definitely have trouble in forking out even a thousand

Plan your family budget and keep tracks of all expenses that include fixed monthly payments and accidental payments. Every penny you spend should be recorded and compare daily your incurred payment or purchases with your targeted budget. If you do this I am sure there will not be expenses more than the budget.

Even so, you still get money even if it's not fixed. You still have to manage whatever you have.

Seeesh! Too bad you miscalculated that one. The good thing is that you realized it and you are set to accept the consequence of that mistake and will take the full responsibility for it. Just learn from that and do some penny pinching at the moment. Just take the necessary penny pinching as a measure to counter your miscalculation. Anyway, as for me, I try to manage my money casually. I don't have a tight budget at the moment. Also, having established my emergency fund and still accumulating savings, I don't have money issues. I really don't spend a lot on things and I can be very thrifty. I often manage my paycheck by paying myself first. I put much of the amount to my bills, family share and investments/savings. They are my priority. Then what is left will be for my expenses. So I always expect that I have little money to spend on my expenses so I have learned ways through time on how to maximize the value of the money left for me. As for some immediate spending, I usually take it off my interests or profit from my investments. i do stock trading and what I earn in there is my extra money to fill my leisure needs. But of course, if money really becomes too tight, penny pinching will not be a problem for me as my mind is conditioned already to do that.

When I was living away from my parents, I used to list down all the bills which I have to pay, allowance for my food, transportation and everyday expenses. Although there were times that I get short with money too when I suddenly bought some unnecessary stuff.

Normally, i will use my money to do charity. If there is some society needed in help, and i have enough money, then i will donate it. Other then that, i will use the extra money to invest in some unitrust and so on, if i am not in urgent.

With not enough money to meet all the needs , I would resort to curb the level of expenditure though with a little heavy heart. Budgeting often makes you frustrated in not having been able to procure your wants and likes.

I know what you mean! It's really frustrating when you're short in budget. What's more depressing is when you're depressed and you want to shop to lighten your mood but you can't because you don't have the money.

My money is going so much further now that I have eliminated a person who was consistently borrowing or begging food from me. She hasn't called me about either since she knows I am so pi$$ed off at her about the stuff she borrowed to put in pawn.
I have actually been having some money left at the end of the month! I am so happy to see a balance left in my bank account. I was having to dip into my coin bank to make ends meet (or give the friend the contents of my coin bank when she "borrowed") and now there is actually coins there too!
It happens that we miscalculate. I try to make sure that before money goes anywhere all my bills are paid and then I deal with the extra. But when I was married I had nothing but problems with the meat head I was married to, and the best thing I did was dissolve the marriage.
I put some aside each month for school expenses. It might only be ten dollars, but it makes a difference when I need to buy books. I also shop for the best possible deal from the various online book sellers.

Yeah. It did happened to me before. And believe me until now there are chances of miscalculation. Blame it as being humans which are bad at maths ^_^-)
What you can do now is to find ways of earning more and if I were you; you should be more creative and spontanous to cover for other expenses that you weren't able to pay for.
Hope to hear mroe about this and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Happy mylotting!

Oh dear, you need to discuss with your mum for help.
I believe she is very understanding as the money you
need is for your education.
This is my first 'trial' month, I am testing it out now.
My husband is officially retired end of January 2012.
With the extra expenses due to Christmas, New Year,
start of new school terms, Chinese New Year and Valentine's
Day, it is something we need to really sit down and discuss
on ways to budget properly. With only RM900 (USD300) a month
passive income, we barely enough to pay our electricity, water,
handphone bills, internet ...not to mention 3 meals a day for
a household of 5 persons. I can't imagine and I really do not
want to think about it right now.
However, we must face reality.. I am looking for a job that can
covers all this expenses. Hope can get one soon. I have to start
to record in the diaries what is necessities and wants and see
how to go about it :) Be positive always.

Oh, I don't want to trouble my mother. I've given her the money and I don't wanna take it back. Besides, she'll use it for our home expenses, I will also be benefiting from it. I still can manage somehow.
Good luck on finding a job! It's the tough times, we shouldn't give up easily.

Very carefully. Actually there are times where I tend to want to overestimate what I need to put out and save. There are times where it is good to think that you need more than you really do. If you do, then the money is right there. If you don't, well the money is rather going to be there. Trying to get what you need exact is not really a good idea and obviously underestimating expenses is really not the best idea.
There are times where it is a tricky and long road to really micromanage each and every one of these expenses. There are many times where we need to figure out what we need and tack on an added five percent or ten percent or whatever our budget is going to really mandate. It is just a long and winding road to really get to that point however.

Money is a stressful matter in these days. I always make calculation every month. At the moment money and bills comes in, I make a two column calculation: one with all the money I have that month and one with all the expenses I have that month. Than I draw a line and think how to manage all. I also have some savings in a bank in case of emergency. But in no case I throw myself in spending more than I can afford.
