Our school joined a certain regional contest and one of the events was poetry interpretation. Our participant did well in fact among them, she was one of the best. However, we were very disappointed with the result; not just because we lost but also because the proclaimed winners' performances were very simple with less emotions and gestures. So, i kept on asking myself on what went wrong. Can anybody tell me what are the do's and don'ts in interpreting poetry? I might be enlightened and accept the defeat light heartedly. Thank you.

There are many ways to interpret any poem - you were just unlucky

Have you not asked the criteria for the contest? Before the contest start, I think the criteria for judging are read.

I am not really an expert on this but I do expose my students in contests. I usually look at the criteria and focus on the ones that get high percentages. If the judges emphasize voice projection very highly, let's say 40%, then I will focus more on that part when I train a student.
