My mom is 86. She had them last year, and the pain was so bad for her that she told me I might as well call the family and tell them to come. She had been told it would be that painful, but she honestly thought she would die. She was prescribed an ointment for the itching and spreading of the rash, and she was given some very strong pain medicine that made her sleep several hours after each dose. Anyone I ever spoke about shingles felt the same way about the pain being so bad. I think it lasted badly for about 3 weeks. It came back some a couple of times.

A young lady I provided direct support for took the acyclovir, which is an anti viral, and the cipro is an antibiotic, so it keeps down the chance of a secondary bacterial infection. She was only 26, had it on her hand and it was the second time she ever had it. They give Lortab due to not wanting people to take aspirin products while having a virus. When I took it for my foot I got to where I had hot flashes when it was wearing off. They used to prescribe a topical cream called Zostrix, which is made with the oil from peppers. I would ask your doctor about that. It is supposed to work by being a counter irritant, I think. I have not heard of doing that in a long time. I think the Aveeno soaks sound very soothing, though. Like Sid suggested.

They will be gone in 4 or 5 days, I think. But even after they are gone visually, you feel feel bruised where they were. Mom's started on the side of the back, on the side and some under her bre*st. I will see if I can find the medicine she was taking. I don't know if I can.
I am sorry, I wasn't able to find it. She was taking a red and white capsule which was causing halucinations and alot of movement with her limbs while sleeping so they put her on a smaller dosage which was a solid red capsule. One was 500mg and one was 300mg. She also was taking loratab which she was already prescribed. I was giving them to her every four hours, so she was taking 6 loratabs per 24 hours which she had never taken before, but she needed them at this time and the doctor okayed it with me.

Writersedge here on MyLot just had them a week or so ago. She had some prescriptions, and a mild case. What does your Doctor say about them? I know for some people they are very painful. If writersedge is not on your friend list, look at today's discussions, she started one earlier.

One of my daughters had them when she was only 13. It's very unusual for anyone to get them that young but it does happen. She had only gotten a very mild case of the chicken pox when she was a child. The doctor told me to give her warm Aveeno baths frequently. Hers only lasted about a week if I remember right. She is 18 now and for the life of me, I can't recall if she got any meds for it.
