Starting a family game night?

I've been thinking about this for a while but have yet to orchestrate it. Or rather 'pitch' it to my family. I rarely see part of my family - my mom, my aunt, my 9 year old half-sister, and if I do, we rarely actually DO anything. I thought of a brilliant idea - maybe starting a 'once a month' family game night? Including but not limited to Clue, Life, Checkers(?), so on and so forth. I know it sounds cheesy but it could be really fun! Bust out some munchies (and possible some Vino), and play games until our hearts are content! I think this would be a great way to not spend money but spend time with the family at the same time. We all barely cross paths with our different schedules, it would be nice to set aside a time when we are all free to 'bond' as a family, which we rarely do (except on major holidays, it seems like). Plus I love board games. It's a win-win, right? Have you ever hosted a 'family game night'?

No, I've never held a family game night. I don't have kids yet, and I don't have relatives living nearby. When I have kids, I probably will do game nights with our immediate family and a few close friends who are like family. However, I don't think I'd ever want the extended family over for something like that, even if we did live near each other. It would likely end badly--fighting over politics and religion.

I think that is sounds like a nice idea. I would like to do something like that with my family. My husband and I have a couple of boardgames, but we don't use them much, and it would be fun to play those games with a big group of people. I just don't know if it would be possible to arrange something like that, because our relatives don't live on our island and they are all busy with work and other activities. I don't know we would be able to meet and play board games, but I like the idea.

we used to make Sunday nights our game nights but now my kids are older and don't really want to do that, but on some holidays (like family day here in Canada) we will have a fun day of playing games and watching movies and having some snacks.

Every few months we attempt it. Used to do it alot more when I had a screened in room - used to play scrabble out there after dinner with my kids and sometimes their friends. But they were a little younger then. Now they drive, they are 17 and 19 and it is hard to pin them down. I think it is a great idea for you to start doing it. Once a month is not too often. You can let a different person pick the first game each month. Kudos to you!

There was a time that we got hooked into scrabble. I think that was the time when the Deluxe Edition came out. We bought one, and we were already playing it once a week. Even though my little one kept getting the tiles and playing with them, it was a fun activity for the whole family. It lasted for a few months. Hope you have a great time with your family!
