have you hear Marang fruit?or have you tried to eat this kind of fruit?i love to eat marang since i was a small girl but never it came into my mind that it is an exotic fruit here in Mindanao...a very popular dessert here in Mindanao and it is very nutritious.it contains fats, carbohydrates, protein, calcium, phosphorous, vitamin A, iron, retinol, beta-carotine, niacin, roboflavin, thiamine, ascorbic acid etc...was surprised to know how how nutritious it is...the scent of it is strong when ripe and opened, but it has to be consumed immediately or it may losses its flavor and oxidizes.the seeds also is edible could be roasted or boiled...
about in your place, what are the exotic foods that you could share?

I checked in the net that the fruit "Marang" is also called "tarap", the name we commonly call it here in the island of Borneo. I would say tarap is an acquired taste, a bit like durian, due to its strong smell and unusual taste. Its outer layer looks like a soft version of durian. Tarap is a must try for the tourists that come to Sabah, East Malaysia. My family likes tarap and it is still quite cheap perhaps it is because of its short storage period.

Yes, there is no tarap in Peninsular Malaysia. When my friends cam over from Peninsular, I bought some for them to try. Some liked it but some didn't. There is one friend when he comes over he sure will look for the fruit but since it is a seasonal fruit, it is not available all the time.

i haven't heard about that fruit yet.
and i really want to visit mindanao someday.
if you are really enjoying it and sharing
facts about it here, that must taste very good.
hmmm...
let me see.
the only exotic fruits i can see around my place right now
is aratilis.
since its growing out from dirty creeks.
they say it's sweet, but i think no one would dare eat
something that sprung up from the polluted sewage. XD

Hi sweetajlo!
Yeah and this is actually something that I really like and love to eat, the only problem that I have is that its quite expensive over here unlike there in Mindanao that its just so cheap that I can afford to buy as many as I can.
It is actually my husband's sister who introduces me to this fruit way back in year 2000 when I first visited their place in Cagayan de Oro, the first time I have a taste of it, I come to like it that's hy I checked this fruit in our stores in my town in Luzon and I am really surprised to know that it costs almost 10x higher than its price in CDO! haha anyway, whenever I got a chance and saw it in our market here, I bought even one just to have a taste of it! I just have one last Monday! Yummy!
And with all those nutritional values that you mentioned, I guess I will love it more! I also like Mangosteen.

Yeah! I've tried it since I'm a native of Mindanao, it has a milky taste but actually I don't really know how to describe it but all I can say is that it's very delicious. it's usually our dessert back in my hometown but since coming here in manila a couple of years ago, I am now beginning to miss and crave for this fruit among others which are more commonly or are usually found only in Mindanao like the Avocado, Guyabano, Balimbing or star fruit, siregwelas, lomboy, tambis among many others. I really miss these fruits as they are nowhere and seldom to be found here in NCR.

ohhh...!!!glad to know that you are a native of Mindanao...Yes! i am totally agree with you...that there are lots of fruits here in Mindanao and exactly it is cheaper compared to other places...:) and that is the only reason why i don't stay long there in Manila coz i love eating fruits and when i tried to go to market there it is indeed expensive and was shock to know the price hehehe was even worried that someday we move back there in manila since my husband is working there, like you i would definitely missed the fruits here in our place...just this morning we eat the last piece of avocado hehehe yummy and sweet..:)
