Valentine's Day is a big day for couples, but if you're single (whether just recently or for a long time) it can be a sad day when when you see couples exchanging cards or kissing or going to to dinner or seeing a movie, all together. That's my situation. I'm in my '40's and I haven't had a girlfriend since the '90's. I have felt sad for a long time until I met a girl in college who happened to live near me & so we hung out together that summer & as a result, we had a great friendship together. She wanted to be romantically involved but I didn't. I only wanted to be good friends with her & have been for the last 4 years. We have been getting each other cards & gifts for Valentine's Day, birthdays & Christmas since then. She had a boyfriend since last year, but we're still close. So, I'm grateful she's in my life as a friend. I also live with my mother whose been a widow since Nov. '10. Therefore, I have her, my friend & my family. So, I have some kind of love in my life even though it's not romantic. But isn't Valentine's about all kinds of love - romantic, brotherly love, friendly love, unconditional love? I feel grateful for the people in my life - my family & friends. So, Valentine's isn't so sad as it used to be. We had my sister & her family over & I had fun joking around with my neices. Today, I took my Mom to see "The Artist" the silent movie since she has a hearing problem. It was a great day hangingout with her today. It was a good Valentine's Day!

wow, dcunni, what a great story,, I have always said that unless
you are shy beyond belief, there is no reason noone should not have
a friend somewhere that they can count on...at least to be a real
friend and care about then unconditionally, withour benefits...
I am happy you had a great day with MOM, thats special also...
That young lady may not be your sweetheart but she is your friend
which may count for a lot more and more special...sweethearts may
come and go but a REAL friend will be there forever..
I would love to be your friend...You sound like a very lovely
person...welcome to mylot and:
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!!!!!!!

Valentines does not need to be sad for anyone. If its a sad day for you, you made it sad! It is enough for most singles to enjoy the love and kisses of others. Not a few happy people enjoy Valentines because they are single, and don't need the additional bother that saucy kisses conjure up!

Valentine's Day KIND OF is a sad day for singletons such as ourselves. In a way. We don't have romantic relationships, lovers, boyfriends, girlfriends, significant others, or what have you. Then again, it's just a silly holiday. But you're right - being surrounded by loved ones, even if it's just family or friends or co-workers or whatever, it beats being alone. BEING completely alone on Valentine's Day is not fun. I am also lucky for having good friends that love me and vice versa, and being so close with my family. We really can't take these things for granted. Unfortunately most all of my friends and family are celebrating with their beaus tonight. . I think I might hang out with my dad.

I admire you for celebrating Valentines Day with your mother, well it is true that Valentines is not only for couples but for everyone & that includes our loved ones, friends & relatives. Valentines is all about making our love ones feel how we value & love them. In this day we show our appreciation to them though we can do every single day a Valentines day.
We don't need to wait for a special occasion to let our love ones feel our love & appreciation. It has been our nature to give flowers, chocolates & gifts to our partner during this day, as my friend says Valentines is for woman it is the time where in we receive a lot. But we should also take into consideration that our mother, grand mother & sister were also woman that deserves to have a valentine with us & i really do admire you for doing such.

I'm single, but I'm pro-Valentine's Day. I do understand that everyday is a perfect day to show our special ones the best love there is, but just like how we celebrate Christ during Christmas (which isn't actually His birthday), Valentine's Day is a perfect day to make special and celebrate love. And it need not be a romantic love but love-- in any forms, size and shape. Even if I am single, I can feel the love around, seeing couples going out on a date, having dinner, watching movies don't depress me at all. It instead inspires me and makes me marvel about the wonder that is LOVE.
