With a price constraint, it's best to focus on the parts of the laptop that are not easy to upgrade, if at all. So I would first concentrate on a discrete graphics card, as integrated graphics won't cut it for gaming. Also integrated graphics take from your main memory; on a 4GB machine (4096 Mb) if you have an integrated graphics card at 512Mb, you end up with 3584 of main memory because of the leeching of the integrated graphics. Next make sure you get as much processor as you can afford. Dual core would be considered bare minimum; quad core would be better. The other thing is the display panel; don't get caught up in the inch game as resolution is what you want to look at. 1366x768 is a very common resolution for a laptop display, but that is only 720p HD. If you want to watch Blu-ray in full HD, you need a minimum of 1920x1080. This article talks more about resolution: http://yhoo.it/AvWsFV Hard drives and memory can easily be upgraded, so don't overspend there. Off the shelf probably won't get you the config you need, unless you are lucky to find one on-sale, so a vendor that allows you to custom configure is your best bet.
