I was told to wait till night time to wash clothes because you can save money on electricity bill. Is that true? I haven't paid too much attention to the bill when I did it. It looks the same to me. I know for gas, to use cold water when washing clothes because you can save some money and also put quick wash or dry.

Hi blkqueen,
Certain countries have a different electricity tariff for day and night usage. If your utility company does indeed provide such a scheme then you will save electricity when you wash your clothes or do your ironing in the night. I suppose you can check with your utility company or maybe check the monthly bill. In most countries the electricity tariff is the same whether day or night. So there is no advantage in using the washing machine in the night.

for me, to save electricity bill is not using washing machine but using hand to wash clothes.
because of my washing machine was broken for days, but I didn't have it fixed.
so this may saved me much money.
but I am scheduling to have my washing machine fixed, then it will help my hands out.

I have heard this a few times. My grandma told me she heard it on the news. I am not sure if it is true but that is what I have heard. I never really paid enough attention before and after to the bills either. When I get my own place again I am going to try it, I have nothing to lose thats for sure. If it will save me some money that would be aweome! If not, nothing lost anyway...

As you have learned here, it depends on your own utility company and whether they offer "off peak rates". Another thing is the heating and cooling. If you wash at night and use the dryer and the weather is cool, it adds some heat to your home. If it is a season to use the air conditioner, you will add less heat to your house if you wait til the sun goes down.

Looks like there is another plus for Italian lifestyle then.
In fact from 8pm to 8am (and at week-ends) the electricity is cheaper and I make sure that I only use the washing machine after dark. It certainly helps to save on the bill and every little helps!
Contact your supplier to find out if there are different rates where you live too.

I have always heard this and I try to do this as often as possible but I never really notice a difference in the bills. Now, when I hang my clothes instead of using the dryer I notice a difference.

If this really does work one day i will let you know. Im doing to have to start trying this out at night when it gets dark because saving money is in my pocket right now LOL. I need more money right now. Im really working hard on this site today to make more money and to get to my goal for the week. Not sure if i will have anymore time this week. But if the elctricity does do this im sure there would be alot more people doing this too and i have never heard of it becasue in America and in south Florida i think its all the same but who really knows anyways. I would like ot ry it out and help save money at my household. We always like to save money and get the electric bill down as much as possible too.

Probably in my country (Italy) there are some promotions on consumption of electricity you can save money if you use a lot of power in the night. But this does not concern me personally, because in my contract with the supplier company, I do not enjoy any advantage on the hourly energy delivery.

It is possible. In my country, electricity consumption is lower at nighttime compared to daytime and as such, the more expensive generator-run electricity producers aren't used during these times. This makes electricity costs lower. But I think this is only applicable to commercial establishments. Residential users would still pay the same cost regardless of the time of day.

If there is any difference,I think it would be negligible cause even if night rates are lower, don't think it would make a dent if considered in general. If you want to save on electricity, I had read that you have to put your focus more on lighting and secondly on cooling or heating ( depends on where you are) these are the biggest electricity eaters (also includes everything that runs on motors like the refrigerator which is also part of cooling)
