Hi there sweet little Hatley!
I hope your knee if much better today and please try to get into the "habit" of checking the halls for spills. That sounds just horrible with you twisting your knee, ouch! I know when you have a lot of things on your mind, we all tend to forget what to check for, so that's why I mentioned the word "habit"...this helps some.
Last year I hurt my hip and leg and till this day I have no idea how I did it. All I know is that I was laid up for a month on the couch and the pain was excruciating. The muscles in my leg from the hip down were just burning. I couldn't stand for more than a few seconds without almost falling to the floor. They kept asking me at the hospital if I fell, and I kept telling them no, which I didn't. I must have turned weird or twisted differently from what I normally do because that's all I could think of on what happened...ugh. I do remember doing laundry that day and in the evening I bent over to blow a candle out but something was in my way and I might have twisted wrong.
Needless to say, I am very, very careful now when carrying my laundry downstairs or haha, blowing out any candles. Sounds crazy but yes, we do learn from history......one way or the other.

Hi Kashmeresmycat that sounds like the experience I had while I was just trying to exercise to lost weight. I was running in place in myliving room when I just twisted my foot awkardly. the paind was just horrible. I went to my doctor who sent me for x rays. they found nothing broken so the doctor just told me " you sprained your ankle. I kept telling him it was the side of my foot, my left foot on the innerside hurt so bad I could not walk.so fianlly he sent me to a podiatiristl'Allo he had to do was look at my foot turned so I w as walking on the inner side of my foot. He said sternly." you know you have ruptured the tendon in your foot? Its gone too long now I cannot repair it. You will have to wear special shoes with'
a strong brace just to keep your foot upright so you can walk."
I was just furious with the primary care doctor I had not to have known a ruptured tendon,. I thought of suing him but he had left the clinic to work in some Southern State. He left with four malpractice suits hanging over him.so today I still h ave to wear the heavy steel brace with the ugly orthopedic shoes just to be able to walk. and all I had done was run in place and just misstep,
It was so odd how it happened.
I was so careful from then on. Just one misstep and a doctor who did not known a ruptured tendon and you can be partly handicapped for life. weird. so now I am so extra careful even if people think I am too careful

hi elicbxn yes I really learned some valuable lessons that day.
So Maggie is coming home Friday so she must be a lot better .
She has been ill for quite some time. Yes I fear you will be
even busier. I home your new blind roomie is slowing getting
use to her room and you all getting used to her too.
We have two blind men here, and I am amazed at how much progress the newer blind man has made. I am also glad that most of the residents are always willing to guide either blind man if he loses his way. for awhile here we seemed to have a lot of residents that cared for nobody but themselves.sad.As Jessie one of my favorite residents here told me"We are all one big family and should look out for each other." He lives that statement always ready to help anyone who needs help.

hi bunnybon yes in the text of general history and the fact that this day last year after dinner I was walking quickly down the hall not looking at the floor. my feet went out from under me and I had a hard fall.ended u p in rehab for 20 days. so this time I am scanning the floor carefully and walking more slowly so I do not
take another fall. we must be having glitches again in getting notifications. It has not affected me here in Ca but its happened to other mylotters too.
Yes I loved getting my earning a day early too. Hope they get those notifications glitches repaired again.

hi jenInTn well I made it without repeating history. No falls so 'all is well. Yes I have done that too where I try something just
'on more time to see if it will work this time, usually it does not as there was some good reason in the first place for it to fail. lol sometimes it takes me twice before I learn from my mistakes. those times I feel really silly knowing that my endeavor was doomed to start with.

There is something in which. We have an old saying,"past experience, if not forgotten,is a guide for the future."We learn from history, from other people's experience, from our own life every day, however something is hard to guard against sometimes. We can only say we may make fewer mistakes through learning.

thats a really good saying and I have tr ied to live that'way'too.I actually scanned the f loors all the way to the elevator for spills and got safely to my room. a fall on a tile floor can really'do some damage to a person.Of course being human beings we still will'
make some mistakes but hopefully they willnot the sane ibes,

The tile floor is slippery, especially with water on it.You had better go together with someone else when you go to your room,so that she may support you with her hand if you need.

hi lil toni welcome to mylotl. yes of course unintentionally but this time I was so careful my roomie scowled at me for being so slow but I did not want another fall .I told her why I was being so careful then she agreed with me too. so history did not repeat itself for me this year. thank goodness.

I would say that the lesson you take from this history is to always look for spills, they are certainly dangerous for you. Do not repeat this history.

hi GardenGerty yep as we humans are not perfect there are usually
small spills along the hallways. On tile thats waxed this can be
a real disastrous thing. so to night after dinner I will scan along the hall and avoid the inevitable spill. that fall took 20 days in the rehab to almost heal and another few weeks before I was really
pain free.

hi cher you know I never used to scan the hallways in front of the elevators for spills but I do now. Of course its safer for me now
with a walker but spills will occur as long as people carry coffee and soft drinks in cups to their rooms. So this evening I will as
'usual scan the floor carefully as I start towards the elevator.
One bad fall has taught me a lot. sadly or not so sadly perhaps.

Hi Hatley,
Yes, we are supposed to learn from things and if not then surely we'll repeat the error. You sound as if you learned and hopefully you won't end up in a rehab hospital again. I took a huge fall a couple of years ago and am amazed that the consequences were not worse than they were. I stepped off the curb to get into my car and hit a patch of ice. I went straight up in the air and landed real real hard on the pavement...flat on my back and head! AND under the wheel of the vehicle next to my car! I could not move at first but I heard that car start up and adrenelin kicked in and I pulled myself up enough holding onto his passenger door and used my other hand to bang on his window. He jumped out and helped me up and stayed with me until I felt ok to drive. No broken bones and did not get run over so I was lucky. I am now very very careful when walking and look for ice.

I am amazed that I did NOT break any bones. It was such a hard fall and I did feel it for the longest time. My mom had osteop...I'm sorry...can't spell that but you know what I mean. She was so worried about me having the same condition and kept warning me to drink more milk. I'd laugh and say..."ok Mom, I'll make Kaluah every week!" She would shake her head...it wasn't what she meant. Inside, I did worry a bit but I don't have insurance and so don't just go to the doctors so they can find things that I can't afford to take care of. This fall did indicate to me that I probably do not have my mom's bones...hopefully. I'm almost 56 now and so far so good. Hoping I take after my dad's side of the family when it comes to this stuff. In most aspects I do and I hope this is one of them too.

hi sid nothing like a glassy spot of ice and whoops down you go.
years back I w as a sophmore in the U OfS.Dak . I had a class
across campus and it started to ran s o I was running to get
to my class on time and get out of the rain. whoos down I went right on my tailbone. talk about instant pain. I limped to
the campus doctor who took me to x ray.yep I had broke my tail bone
so for six long weeks had to carry a cushion arou
nd to classes
in order for me to sit down.
I am so glad you did not break any bones in your awful fall.
I too now am very careful watching for spills on the tile floor.
Live and learn.

hi sid I thought I had good bones too until four years ago I had a bad fall on the cement sidewalk outside my favorite restaurant."landed on my left shoulder. when I tried to use my hands to get up my left arm dangled. a couple who saw me fall called the paramedics for me. I w as taken to the nearest hospital. the x rays showed I had not just broken my left shoulder, I had literally crushed the bones. they had to a shoulder joint replacement.
but one good thing I was taken off avandia that diabetes med with side effects that cause bone loss, anemia and fluid retention.I am told now my bones are fine. hope so anyway.

hi sjvg remembering the pain and suffering and the black black eyes i received when I fell hard face down on the tile floor,I was
super careful today and specially after dinner as thats when I hit the spilled water and my feet went out from under me. So am now safe here in my desk chair busily trying to comment on all the responses I have obtained .I made more discussions than I usually do as this is such a short month even with one more day added.Last
year at this time i was in the ER being x rayed all over after that hard fall. I finally landed in the rehab hospital the next day.
so this year I was careful all day not to slip or slide on any spills.

Hi Aunt Hatley! Yes...I agree we learn from our past mistakes and near misses. I've learned I have to measure the amount if food in ounces before eating so I don't get sick. I've been sick too many times.

hi again I am quite overweight but was told not enough to qualify
'for bypass surgery. but my doctor was sure I had a physical reason for not being able to lose weight. So he sent me to have blood work done and sure enough I was low thyroid. since he put me on thyroid
medication I have started to l ose weight. slowly but surely so
I am happy about that. take care PQ and do measure yourfood as its not fun feeling ill.

Hi Pointless Questions Yes we really do. Forgive me but I think
I remember right ,you had gastric bypass surgery? I know friends
who had that and they also told me they had to measure their
food as they could only eat so many ounces or they would
get really ill. Hope you remember that now so you will not
be ill again. life to short for falls and for illnesses from
to much food. hugs from hatley.

Yes that is correct. I had the bypass. 12 ounces is too much so I can't eye ball my servings. If I get too much I eat it and too much will cause great pain and nausea. I also get short of breath. So eating 6 to 8 ounces is best for me.

Hi Hatley,
Nice discussion.
Whenever, someone talks about spills, the only person that comes into my mind is my mother. She has been a victim to it several times, but still she seems to be negligent.I love her a lot, don't want her to be a victim to such dangerous bedridden accidents. We try to be cautious whenever there are parties in our house. For her,she doesn't learn from history as she keeps repeating them.
At my home, there is a funny side even in such serious issues. My mother starts laughing out loud everytime she falls/skips.That make us laugh too though we don't want to in such a risky situation.Later as usual we regret.

hi flowerchilde yes we sure do as look at us the US we have meddled into wars we should have stayed out of then came right back and did it again. we should be staying home and working on our problems of
jobless ness and the too high cost of living not fighting wars that have not a thing to do with us.butr I did avoid the error that caused me to land in the rehab hospital last year on this date. I did not fall and thus am not in need of medical help.

hisaundyl yes it is,sometimes when the air is really cold it
will ache but at least I can walk on it unlike last year.
It took two trips to the Er in two different hospitals before
the doctors were convince I really could not walk on that leg'as my knee hurt so much. my doctor sort of cleared that up and i was admitted to the rehab hospital the evening of the second day.,
This year I just made sure my history did not repeat itself.

I think this is one of the best ways to learn. If we don't learn from our experiences we may never learn at all. My take is that we will repeat it over and over until we learn. Glad you got past that fall and hope you never let it happen to you again.

I do agree with the saying we learn from history or we are bound to repeat the errors again. The smart ones do learn from history or past mistakes.Even return on investments according to analysts are repeated only those who are aware and smart can latch on to these repeating phenomena. As long as we don't fall for the same faults twicw i say we are making progress.

pickjim I also make errors just as I hit post then have to explain them. I this time after dinner scanned the tile floor from the dining room to the front desk and to the elevator and right on
to our room. No falls, no twisted knee, no pain no long stay
in the rehab hospital but me safe and sound back here in my room with no pain this time. so this history did not get repeated this year. thank God.

hi fanta yes children do not always understand why we
are stern with them but as they mature then they are glad we
were stern before. I was just horrified that evening when my
feet went out from under me and I smacked face down on the
floor. I broke my nose and some bones in my face and had two really black eyes but my knee was badly injured, this year I took all
precautions so I did not fall at all .this time It was fine.

We should learn from past, history. If not, more or less you will be faceing same troubles again. We have a history for learning how to make things better. There are many examples big mistakes, no matter if it is your past life or history at all.
But reality is different, we repeat same things again and again. We are not learning, we just realize that same things hapenned again.

hi Ernesto yes we must learn from past history or find
ourselves repeating the error instead of learning from
it. this year I checked the halls for spills and walked
carefully and safely,. people will carry= drinks to their
rooms and spill them along the way. so one has to just'
watch and not step in it at all.
