Too many singing shows?

For those of you in the U.S., or who watch American television - am I the only one out there who thinks that having 3+ television shows about SINGING - contest-wise, is a little overkill? Me and my boss were bored today so we were kind of discussing this. So far, we have American Idol of course, The Voice, and the X-Factor (I think that's what it's called). I'm sure there are more than just those, but I'm just wondering if anyone else thinks that's a little too many to follow? Or if it's a little too many in general? How many do we really need? Does America have a fixation on singing or what? And it's not like I'm saying I dislike singing or that I've never watched American Idol or whatever, because I have... Just wondering. For those of you who are huge fans of these types of shows, which is best? Are they all kind of the same, or run together after a while? Do you watch all three or maybe just one?

Hi, I like American Idol! :) My favorite is David Archuleta! I think there are too many singing shows around not the world. Whenever I switch from one channel to another, I always come across a singing contest. I think it is a good thing! It shows that the world is a happy place where everyone loves to sing. Minus the drama of unhealthy competition!

One of the things I hate about television is as soon as some sort of show takes off we get bombarded with copies of the same, here in Australia we have so many crime investigation shows and nearly all with initial names that I can't keep up with, and of course all the reality shows....something new would be nice.

That has happened historically here in the US. We has the explosion of Law and Order series which is now down to just Special Victims Unit. Then there are the forensic crime dramas. Now we starting to see mythic creatures like vampires and zombies, plus shows relating to fairy tales. There is a general lack of creativity which has probably been made worse here by the increased number of broadcast and cable networks. It's not just limited to TV though since movies are made based on old TV shows and TV tries to make their versions of hit movies.

I think there are too many 'reality' shows in general with talent shows being one class. One of the problems is that they are too easy to produce and don't cost as much as scripted shows. Therefore networks are more willing to buy shows like that rather than buy or keep shows like Terra Nova that are expensive to produce.

Well since American idol was out first i still watch that show. I did start watching The Voice but then this week i didnt get to watch it. I forgot about it and didnt record it so oh well i guess i will try next week but i wont miss a show of American Idol because i do like that one still. Now also the X Factor is a great show. They have all different ages and different people on there and i think that show is incredible diverse because of the age groups and its a great show to watch. I watched every show of it this past year and probably will do the same next year. Now if i had to pick a faorite one i would have to say X factor only becasue of the judges picking the songs and then the singers singing it and it may be someone young or older then 30. Now in American Idol you cant be older than 30 so... I think you have more chances in X Factor to make it big.

To be honest I am not a U.S. citizen, but I come from Italy. However, do not hide the fact that even in my country are broadcast on television, shows of any kind. Just show many are imported from your country (USA) and then dubbed into Italian. Just think of the television series such as Dr. House, CSI Miami, CSI New York, and more. We Italians, and I say this with all sincerity, we are not very good at reciting to your standards. I wanted to mention that the X-Factor, there is also an all-Italian version.

Hi maezee,First I don't have a fixation on singing and I do watch all three shows when I want to...I mean I have more than 3 channels on my television and if I don't want to watch them I just turn the channel. There are a lot of court reality shows and a lot of other reality shows as ,, Its always my option to watch if I want to,, Why should I care how many are on...I have much more in life that I can focus energy on than to worry about whats and how much of it is on TV...its just as easy to change the channel... If these shows were not likable by someone they would be off channel.

I use to watch American Idol left when Simon was no longer on the show. X-Factor is Simon's show and my daughter and I watch it. I did watch the first season of The Voice, but not watching this season. I think people should watch whichever ones they want and the ratings will determine how many are left at the end of the season.

Yea it sounds kind a familiar to me. there are a lot of singing talent reallity shows going in the TV. Most often they compromise a lot of singing quality. They are offering huge prizes, and in return they are earning a lot of revenue by voting through sending SMS. for an example there are 20 contestants from various states. they all are amature singers. they provide them a platform and some guidelines to participate. The organizers then sick public vote through SMS and after that they decide the winner one by one. thats it, i think. happy lotting

agree! I do watch THE Voice because of Adam L. Lol. But i do enjoy the show than most singing shows out there... I really cannot say which are the best because i do not bother with all other shows though. So far i love the The Voice :)

I notice that too. There are so many people who want to gain instant fame via these singing shows. I'd prefer more of "So you think you can dance" or "Dancing with the Stars" but I guess singing shows are easier to stage. How about cooking shows and make-over shows?

Hi! I am not from USA but I watched American Idol at times and some foreign channels. I don't know but maybe this is their way of discovering new talents or maybe they thought is American Idol got a lot of viewers then they could make another singing contest show to attract another set of viewers. I think its more fun if they make ir a variety rather than too much singing contest.

I also think there are too many shows. Maybe they satisfied people in some angles, but I think it is just a little too many. One or two is just fine :)
