You can't enter more than ten terms for tags. Of course, the tag field can hold a great many more, most of which are hidden in the display. Tags are sorted alphabetically but duplicate tags get higher priority in the display. Most tags are entered by users but one tag, 'mature content', is added automatically and triggered by the occurrence of certain words (some of which may be quite innocent in the context they are used) anywhere in a discussion.
How many I, personally, enter depends on the discussion, whether I think that more tags would better describe the discussion or whether I have used words in my response which I think would be worthy of a tag. I usually wait until after I have posted a discussion or a response before adding tags. If it seems to me that there are sufficient already, I won't add any. Occasionally I will ask Admin to remove tags which are offensive or irrelevant.

If tagging my own discussion, usually I wrote 5 words.
But when tagging to discussion that I am responding with, I only write one word.
Sometimes I skipped the tag if I saw same word was already posted by other responders or might be the topic starter.

The maximum amount of tags we are allowed use is 10, which is too bad because there have been times when I've had 15 words or phrases for tags
I don't really have a particular number that I aim for. I try to come up with as many related tags as possible. Usually, I come up with a minimum of 2 tags for discussions. It really depends on what the discussion is about. I try to use lots of tags so other people who may be searching for this topic can find it with ease.
