I bought a cow for our milk needs

milking a cow at home - milking a cow at home by hand
India
February 17, 2012 7:02am CST
Today I bought a cow for 20, 000 rupees from the animal market here. She is local breed, not the hybrid, they are bigger, give 15-20 liters of milk daily, but need special food, lot of maintenance, moreover who will milk those 15 liters manually. This cow gives 3 liters in morning 3 in the evening, enough for us. I have built a cow shed for her and engaged a person, he will take care, feed her, milk her; I will pay 3000 rupees to him every month. We had cow in our home till 1964, professional persons were available for taking them to grazing fields full of green grass, for milking the cows, for cleaning the cowsheds, for making cakes from cow dung, and they were used as fuels. But now none such professionals are available, grazing fields are no more. In my family we bought milk from professional milk sellers, milk is never pure, adulterated with rice, wheat flour, groundnut paste etc; some even mix water from ponds and streams full of germs. While boiling the added stuff gets settled in the bottom. Next I bought from local dairy, we call them ‘Gosala’, later I knew they inject the cow with hormones to increase the yield. So I stopped buying from there. I also bought milk in pouches from Government owned dairy; they say it is ‘PURE PASTURISED COW MILK’, but what I learn is they buy milk from societies, it has buffalo, goat, camel milk; powder milk is added to make it look thicker. Buffalo milk causes gout, not well for babies; though good for tea only; hence to get 100% pure milk I bought the cow. From where you get your milk, do you keep cows at home? Please respond, comment on this and share your opinion. Thanks in advance. Let’s enjoy life to fullest. Professor ‘*^Bhuwan^*’. . 17/2/2012.

A cow would be a good investment. I was brought up outside the city limits and so we were able to have chickens. But after afew years they rezoned the area and it is not in the city limits. And my daughter always buys 1% milk and i don't care for it. I like whole real milk. Not processed in anyway.

We buy semi skimmed milk in our house, just some of the creamy fat taken out.

It's supposed to be free of fat. It looks like colored water. Why bother with it?! Now they have one called fat free. I just like my regular milk.

We do save a little bit of money on our milk as we buy it in 6 pints cartons which is a lot cheaper than buying it by the pint, like we used ot have ot in the old days when I was a girl

You are correct it would not save any money to have a cow in the garden, don't think the neighbours would be too keen on an cow in our garden. We will stick to going ot the shops and buying the bilk in 6 pint cartons

We used to have a cow. Either me or my husband would milk her and feed her. We didn't have much land so we bought hay and grain for her. Most people here buy pasteurized milk from the store, which isn't as good for you as raw, fresh milk, but since so many live in cities, they can't get milk before it goes bad, so they have to use pasteurized milk. Pasteurized milk is transported all across the nation. Our laws won't allow adulteration, although most milk (unless it's organic) contains hormones, antibiotics and pesticide and herbicide residue. I'm lucky in that I have a share in a cow now and get fresh milk without having to take care of her myself.

There were cows only in my grandfather's house.I agree it is good to get unadulterated milk at home but it is a lot of labour. You are fortunate to have a good person to take care of her ; it is quite difficult to maintain the shed and keep it free of mosquitoes.

Hi Professor, it is good to hear that you can have fresh milk from your cow. As for me here, we have to buy milk from the shop since we can't have enough place to feed the cow. Besides that, feeding cow involves a lot of expenses, which we are not interested to bear the cost. I still prefer only to buy milk from the nearest shop in my area here. Indeed, most of our drink also needs milk to make it taste nicer to drink. Hope all of you are healthy and fine now.

That is something we miss in the city. My grandfather used to get milk from a carabao, but since we moved to the city, we get our milk from the stores.

It is a good idea to have a cow so that you can have the natural milk all the time. But it is not possible here. I can't believe that if someone who has a cow at home. You need to have a big space to raise it. Besides, you have to spend time to take care of the cow. This is impossible in the city. We get the milk from the store only. I love China

If we buy any products from market..it is not 100% pure get..nice look and for ssome other reasons they will add some thing which will not be good for health.. Your move to buy a cow for mik is good... but sometimes we find it difficult to maintain a cow.. For past years I was buying milk form my neighbour..so he l not add any thing to milk which is injurious to health...

You drink raw milk! Ewwww! I grew up drinking raw milk! I grew up on a small dairy farm. Now if I had to drink raw milk I will say no! I get my milk from the one of the local min-marts. It is all cow's milk and it is pasturized. I buy in in plasitc bags. It is cheaper nad I don't have to worry if the plastic jugs are recycled which I am not sure of!

No we don't take raw milk, but it is boiled for long time to kill bacteria etc and make it thicker, all like thick milk with cream.

hello professor, this is a cool thing. very fresh milk every morning and whenever you need it. it will be very difficult if the cow is here professor. first, it will need a space and a place for gracing which we do not have. so i will have to be content with the milk in cans and the powdered milk. have a nice day. ann

Wow Papa! Thats great! You get to have your real fresh milk everyday. Wont you get high cholesterol with that? We have a farm and we put goats and chickens on it. My mom prefers sheep to cows. I dont know why... Maybe because she feels that sheep are a kinder breed.

:) That was customary once upon a time, wasn't it? I am a city bred person. We take one liter. And it is enough for the two of us. I dont know what are dietary specifications, but as recently as the last Sunday, I am told that is sufficient with periodic supplementing with calcium tablets. So I prefer it that way. :) I dont particularly like milk. :( And Bournavita gets boring after a couple of days. So I would need a lot of variety lol. I was told cow's milk is more risky because it can cause tuberculosis if you do not pasteurise it properly.

Vandanaji I too don't like taste of Bournvita, calcium is good for elderly women, kalyani takes it.. We boil the milk for long time not only to kill bacteria but to make it thick.

Hello Professo, In Delhi too we are not sure if we are buying pure milk or not.We buy it from professional milk seller. Its good that you have bought a cow for your home to fulfill milk need but in Delhi we are not allowed to do so secondly its not that easy to find fodder required by a cow and throw cow dung .

i can't imagine keeeping a cow at home in my area.the denity of population in my city is big,and most of us live in apartment around 100m2 without any yards.so there's no place for cow.cows are often kept in a cowfarm in suburban.many cows woukd be gathering together.the owner of the cowfarm would be rich. we citizans often purchase milk from supermarkets.as the price of the milk is a little high, like me,i don't drink it everyday, sometimes i forget to drink~ but i heard your story,i think it's pretty cool keeping a cow yourself home.this cow would not only give your milk free and help you earn money if you could keep several more cows to produce milk~

Oh, that's great! You bought a cow to supply your milk. I bet you have some grassy land over there. Do you? Or, do you have some other alternatives to feed your cow in case grassy lands are not available?

No more grassy land near, but one can buy grass bundles in the mall for cows etc. Best of luck. Professor

That's great. That's a lit of cost just for milk. I guess if you sell milk it would be worth it. We just go to the corner store when we need milk. Enjoy your cow Professor!

Hello Professor2010, I admire you for such decision. That´s great that you bought a cow. Milk from own production is best, everytime you are drinking it you know what content. I mean what was a feed for cow, and how the cow was milking, because there are some problems if udder is not clean enough. I am buying a milk at special automats for milk. I use to it because I know that it is better that one from shop in paltic or tetra pack boses. I am supporting our farmers, so other adventige. But If there would be some possibility for me to have a cow, I would buy one or too, just for my family and someting for selleng. Great decision was also buying a home breed, it is better, when you dot need high yield. And you are supporting local breeds :-). So other words for that: protecting them agains extincion.
