Is this not due to our play with environment?

‘NASA Science News for Feb. 16, 2012, says; ‘for the first half of this year's winter, the big news was warm temperatures and lack of snow’. Ski resorts were covered in bare dirt, while January temperatures in southern California topped July highs. Then, out of the blue, Europe got clobbered: Over the past two weeks, temperatures in Eastern Europe have nose-dived to -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit). Blizzards and the bone-chilling cold have resulted in the deaths of over 550 people so far, with rooftop-high snow drifts trapping tens of thousands of villagers in their homes and cutting off access to entire towns. It has even snowed as far south as North Africa. In today's story from Science@NASA, JPL climatologist Bill Patzert describes how Mother Nature has done an about face. Europe Hammered by Winter, Is North America Next? FULL STORY at http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2012/16feb_deepfreeze/ A Science Cast video related to this story is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdUa820fT1g In my opinion all this is happening because of our play with Mother Nature. The weather patterns have changed; earlier we had SIX seasons, but now it is just three, summer, Rain and winter. How many seasons you enjoy? What kind of weather you have now, here in my state Orissa of India rainy season is over, but still it rains at times. Please comment on this and share your opinion. Thanks in advance. Let’s enjoy life to fullest. Professor ‘*^Bhuwan^*’. . 17/2/2012.

Hi Professor, You are right and weather patterns are changing everywhere. Here in Canada, February is usually our coldest month, but this years we have set new records for the amount of rain that has fallen this month. I too feel that much of it is caused by the way we have treated our environment. Blessings.

Pose, since we are such close neighbors (I'm from Michigan), I was kind of curious as to how this year's winter was treating Canada. I'm glad you have some warmth as well, but it's so odd having such a crazy February for us as well. I feel like we're in the South! The snow won't stick for more than a week at most, then it's back to rain and melting snow all over again. If I had a basement, I'm sure it would be an aquarium by now!

I am from eastern europe and the weather is still vary cold and snowy. I also think that this a result of our behaviour to Mother Nature. No wonder that we have so big changes in very short time. We see the changes every day, nothing is like it used to be before. If we want to do something with it and stop it, we should work harder on it. But maybe it is too late. Anyway, for us is now good chance to enjoy skiing :-)).

This sort of conversation often comes up. The beauty of statistical data is that you can produce a result to suit your personal view. And weather is so variable, and always has been, that it produces masses of varied data. Man is a mere ant on the surface of the planet but we just hate to think we are insignificant.

We are having a mild Winter. About 35-50 degrees daily. No subzero weather. The city is in a valley so it is usually rather mild but not like this. We haven't had real hard winters for thirty years. We actually usually have a drout situation going on. We have regular four seasons. I like three. Not into the Winter.

hi professor, only two seasons here in the tropics: it is summer and rainy seasons. but then we also feel the changing climate.. in summer, when the sun is up, it gets very very hot that you feel when you are out there in the sun you are being toasted alive. so its always a good time for beach and other outdoor activities. but when it rains.. well the saying goes... it pours (dogs and cats)! there is always this news now and again that a certain place got flooded. or little rain there and there is flash flood. continuous rain in one area and then there is landslides. and we all know these things do not happen before when the trees were aplenty and quarrying was controlled. mining activities are abundant now hence pollution. aside from God made phenomenon.. men have contributed a great deal to these disasters.. ann

Well I'm sure that the climate change may have something to do with something screwy that humans have done with the environment. Of course, we'll know in hindsight about fifteen years from now what the long term damage from me. This could be another period of warming that the Earth tends to go through or we finally did something stupid to really accelerate or doom. Weather remains warm here this winter. Well not as cold and very little snow. Then again, it can really change at the drop of the hat to say the very least. Then again, I've said for years that we only have two seasons where I live. Very hot and very cold, formally known as Summer and Winter. But this year, very cold seems to be getting phased out to only slightly cold.

Actually in the first half of the winter, the ski resorts in New Mexico had plenty of snow, some at record levels for that time of year. Here we have had several snowfalls, just last Tues. into Wed. there was 8 inches. But at least it has only been close to normal temperatures unlike the colder than usual temperatures in December or the record lows in early Feb. last year when I had -9 F at my house.

Where I live,in Wisconsin,we have had a warm winter with little snow. We have been averaging temps in the 30's and 40's fahrenheit must of the time during the day! We have only one major snow storm! By this time most years we have had alot more! When we do get a little snow it is usually melts in a day or two! So I expect we will have a rainy spring and summer! Summer will also be hot and humid! Yuck! I really beleive most of this unusual weather is man made! It is gobal warming! It seems the whole world in affected! That is not good and it will get worse!

Yes it is due to global warming. I was talking to a friend in Wisconsin last night, so i am aware of the weather there. Thanks for response.

I think this weather changes is mostly due to solar activity and to some degree the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Here where I live it is sunny almost 300 days a year. I would like to experience snow at least once in my life!
