U can choose to leave it blank, it's up to u. Upfront payment is a form of deposit or payment u wanna receive before u start on any jobs u got. It's up to u to decide on how much u want, but try not to set it too high because everything in odesk is based on bidding. Of course, whoever has the most tempting bid, lowest upfront payment, tends to win the project.. haha It depends on your needs and if u are urgent for the cash

Hmmmm… It is your choice if you want to fill it up or leave it blank. What I know is you can fill the “upfront payment” option if you have already a feedback so that the employer would never have a second thought to hire you. Based on what I learn about “upfront payment” is that you can fill it up if you feel you are not secured with the employer. Choosing the “fixed price” on Odesk.com is very risky. As for me, it is very risky because there is no guarantee payment so that is why, there is an “upfront payment” on Odesk.com. It is your choice if you want to fill it up or leave it blank but I guess, even if you choose the “upfront payment” option for your projects and then, you have no feedback and you are still new on Odesk, the employer might not probably hire you. There is a high probability that they will choose a contractor that has good feedback even if the contractor is asking for an “upfront payment” for employer.

Most veteran members of oDesk are asking UPFRONT PAYMENT to avoid being scammed. It's like paying you a portion or percentage of the actual price in advance. Just in case a client tends to run after receiving your finished work, at least you get paid somehow.
Fixed-price contract is not guaranteed, there is no way you can force a client to pay you esp. if the client doesn't intend to pay in the first place. So, to split the risk you should ask for upfront.
All of my contracts are hourly. I don't usually apply jobs on fixed-contracts, if I do I always ask upfront. But sad to say, no one took the bait lol.
