I have been a dog lover for as long as i can remember and German shepherd has been always at the top of the line. I have particularly been in love with the German blood line with the arched back and dark color. One of the strongest contender either in show ring or as a working dog.

they are wonderful dogs. loyal, obedient and so brave. they are really family orientated, and would do anything to save those under their care.
however I hate the so called arched back. recently the breed champions have gone back to the very unhealthy excessively sloped backs, and it's so bad for them. the dogs walk like they're crippled, they certainly shouldn't be hailed as prime examples of the breed. in fact, I think the german shepherd a few years back now at crufts went a LONG way to ending britains love affair with that dog show. it no longer airs on terestrial TV, and outrage at the state of that poor dog was a big part of that. it broke my heart seeing his pathetic unnatural gait.
I would very much rather see a german shepherd with a good strong, straight back than some poor creature dragging its hindquarters and being hailed as a champion.

Completely agree with you galena, Over the years selective breeding by professionals show line breeders have pushed the breed toward a bit of mutation and every now and then you can see a show champ literally trotting with a very awkward gait and its cruel but i remember the champion dogs from Germany back in 70's and 80' they had just a little arch in their back not effecting their work efficiency at all but rather just giving them the the distinct signature GSD look. i really love that.

Galena, did you know that a lady started a new breed of German Shepherds, Called Shiloh Shepherds, and they are almost identical to the German Shepherds, but she breed them specifically with a straight back, and healthier hips than the original Shepherds! They are also slightly larger! You ought to see them, they are beautiful animals, look them up online and you will see!

I have a german shepard she is still only a pup 6 months, but training her has been a delight she picks up comands extremely well. Mum said she would do well in agility comepetitions as shes so quick on picking up on comands. They are very loyal, and big softies at heart. Thats why so many enforcements use the german shepard they are always thinking and wanting to play, but yet very loyal to their owners and extremely quick on commands.I love getting cuddles from her, she and my son are inspeperable, where he is she is, where she is he is...lol they have a strong protection sense, she barks at her own shadow, but thats good...hahahaha

I like Shephards, both German and Belgium are undoubtedly beautiful dogs, loyal, obedient and easy to train.
However, for my eyes, Border Collies are more beautiful and are certainly the most intelligent of breeds. They learn quicker than Shepherds but can be harder to train being more self-willed. They are just as affectionate and keen, agile, tireless natural athletes. Having more wolf instinct than other dogs they can be a bit sharp if not trained properly
