Last year, we planted sunflowers, they were huge!! very big. We planted them in a place with lots of sun. They grew so big, they only produced one, or maybe a few more humungous flowers. Eventually, these flowers leaned over and died. We cut them off and they never bloomed again and we removed the sunflowers. They provided goo privacy until they started dying and they didn't last all summer. Do you think I should plant them again this year. People loved to look at them and they were beautiful. I think I should plant them.

If you liked them and want to plant them again, go for it. Mine didn't do well at all last year. We had a very strange summer. We live in the desert so normal June-July-August temperatures are between 90 and 105 and we barely got out of the 80's last summer. So you can imagine what the spring was like. Brrrr I don't know if that's what the problem was or not but after about a month the stems were only about six or eight inches high and then our land lord killed them! I'm going to try planting them again this year, hopefully it will go better for me.

Too much heat isn't good for sunflowers. Neither is to little sun. I am so sorry to hear that your land lord had killed what you managed to grow. Our land lord hired people to do a roofing job and they litterally ruined our plants. I love sunflowers a lot. I think if you wish to plant them you should choose the shadiest spot possible with very little sun so they don't burn. Good luck to you and thanks for answering.

Whether they'll produce one or more blossoms depends on the type of sunflower. Some kinds only produce one. I love sunflowers of all kinds and intend to grow the wild ones on purpose this year. That's because the squirrels cut off all the other kinds just as they're the prettiest. I grew a lot last year and was left with mainly stems. Not pretty. Anyway, if you don't have squirrels to cut them off, I'd say grow them. Leave them on the stem until they go to seed and get dry. Birds will come to eat the seed and it's fun to watch them. I used to grow them just for the birds (in another place). I'd cut them off when they were dry and save them until winter when food is scarce for the birds, then I'd tie them out for them.

I put seeds down all over the side walk for the birds. In the early and mid summer they were in bloom, huge yellow flowers, and then after awhile they started drooping and then ended up being mostly stems, just like you said. I plan on planting them. They are beautiful, they come in diffrent colors too. They are a very pretty flower. Not to mention give a lot of privacy.

I say go lfor it but make sure to put compost or other plant food down in the soil for them as they are heavy feeders and need lots of compost or other good food to be able to grow right. They also need lots of sun hense their name as the heads will follow the sun. If you get the giant kinds, they will only have one flower but some of the smaller varieties will have many flowers so that if you cut some, they will grow other flowers. If you put plenty of organic material in the soil, you will not have to water as much either.

Why not if you enjoy them and get lots of compliments on them. I like planting sunflowers too when I can get them to take. Only trouble for me is once the heads are ready the squirrels are after them.

If I were you, I would plant the sunflowers. Since the sunflowers are beautiful. Besides, lately I am interested in eating the sunflowers seeds. I think they are healthy nuts. They are also good snacks. I love China
