Evelyn is my first name. It is Hebrew for life. It is also a man's name. I was actually named after a famous naval heroe and a queen(Elizabeth).

Hello brother,
When I was named, my mother and father combined their names to create mine. My mother was named Mary and my father was Donald. They combined it and made the name Marydon. From what I've researched both names have meaning. Mary means bitter and the biblical mother of Christ. Don is the diminutive of Donald, but it can have several meanings, but since my father was of Scot/Irish decent, I would assume that has an influence on it. In Ireland it can mean world leader, and about the same in Scotland. From the Gaelic name Domhnall. Several early Scottish kings bore the name. So, I guess my name would mean bitter leader.
The interesting part, the word bitter, by definition refers to taste. But its secondary definition: distasteful or distressing to the mind is probably closer to correct when applied to a name.
Thanks for the discussion and God is good! Blessings on you and your family.
