Being a novice on ham radios I would like to know what is the most widely used brand and what are the most important features to look for. There are so many kinds that it is quite confusing. Which are the most reliable? What are the licensing requirements?

Yesu used to be the choice at one time, but I haven't been in for some time and iCom made a very good one.
Nowadays, $$$ money is the key. Electronics are all good but mostly good and expensive.
I would say good with the cheapest that will do what you want. Don't go for bells and whistles you didn't know you wanted.

Finally settled on getting the Yaesu FT60R. Most places I saw selling it were selling it for $199, but I bought it at Ham Radio Outlet for $169 with free shipping. It shipped from the Burbank, CA store and I got it 2 days later. It came pretty quick since I live in Oxnard, CA just an hour away. Now I just need to get licensed. Thanks for your input.
