The skin sensation of partial numbness or "pins and needles or a type of burning", "tingling" or " creeping" sensation of the skin, is known as "paresthesia". Symptoms may start as a tingling (paresthesia) and change to numbness, or there maybe a combination of decreased sensation (numbness) but with heightened sensation at certain times or with stimulation. Any type of tingling, burning, or numbness is usually a symptom related to a sensory nerve being damaged, diseased, or injured. Only your doctor can advise you the specific medical treatment for this disease and may depend on the condition of your sickness. Medications offered may include Immunosuppressant like Prednisone, intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG), anticonvulsants like Gabapentin or Gabitril and antiviral medications, plus among others, depending on the underlying cause. I n addition to the underlying cause, a palliative treatment care is done, for example, the use of topical numbing creams like lidocaine or prilocaine. However, care must be taken qwhen using such medications, because overuse can aggravate the disease condition. Paresthesia which is caused by Shingles is treated with antiviral medication.
