Are you a "Flipper"?

Hi friends, When you sleep at night, do you sometimes find yourself in the other direction in the morning? You may have turn 180 degrees to sleep at the foot of the bed. My friend had a funny experience. One day she was sleeping on her bed, in the morning when she work up, she banged her head on the underside of her bed. What happened was, in the middle of the night, she rolled off, fell to the floor, then rolled under the bed, all WITHOUT waking up! Do you have a similar experience? Are you so deep a sleeper that you always flip around in your bed and find yourself in a different direction in the morning?

There have been times when i rolled off the bed(when i was 12) and i still remember my mom stuffing the bed with pillows in either sides . To this day,i keep on flipping in bed, certainly not to find myself down the bed though.Great day.

Clever mom. It would be good to get a bed with the sides raised. I guess you do not get to sleep on the upper bunk ever. My cousin once fell down from the upper bunk but luckily she was not hurt. Hope you won't ever hurt yourself by falling out of bed too.

We used to have normal beds, how come you didn't say a word about your flipping habits ? You don't sleep at all ?

Yeah, I am just a robot and doesn't need to sleep, just give me some batteries and engine oil to keep me going I don't flip at all, maybe just turn from left to right if the bed is big enough. Sometimes when I sleep on the sofa I can remain motionless the whole night.

Hi bluemoon As a kid, I had this problem. I always woke up never in the direction where I had started off. They took me to some docs who revealed that I have worms in the stomach Gave me some medicines (those were some really sweeter ones) and I was cured. Today, I dont have this flipping habit anymore. But I think your friend is suffering from some other things as I dont find it healthy to fall off the bed in sleep and dont wake up... Hmm, time for an appointment with her doc - I would suggest that!

Would it mean in any way that those who fell off the bed right way had snakes in their tummy ?

@sunnycool: Snakes in the tummy... Wonder then whom should I go to... A vet or a doc @bluemoon: dear, this is more severe "sleep-too-deeply-and-nothing-can-wake-her-up" than I thought. I mean, I had a friend when at school and she did fall off her bed and had a fractured hand. But she did wake up...

Maybe the snakes curl this way and that way, so the tummy has to follow and then eventually fell off the bed. After all snakes like to slither on the ground right? thesids, I have heard about worms in the stomach and medicine was usually given to drive them out. I hope you didn't get too much pain from that. I don't think my friend has worm problem, just a sleep-too-deeply-and-nothing-can-wake-her-up problem!

Not a flipper, if I move from the position I went to sleep in, it's because I woke up and then rolled over.

It is a rare, rare night that my pea sized bladder doesn't wake me up at least once.

Try to take less water at night. I wonder how did you manage to measure it using a pea?

I hope that doesn't mean that you wake up several times a night, have you ever keep count?

I don't think I am. I'm not sure though but when I wake up, I still find myself in almost the same position as that when I went to bed. My son though is definitely a flipper. It's as if he swims around his bed. Sometimes we're amused on the positions he's in the morning after. But we're a little worried though, thinking that he's having a hard time sleeping.

Hi beamer, I am like that too, I hardly move at all during the night, I can sleep on a very narrow sofa without falling out and without moving at all. My son is also a flipper. Once I found him kissing the bars of his cot, and the next moment, he was sleeping on his stomach! My camera was filled with photos of his different and cute sleeping positions. I don't think you need to worry about your son having sufficient sleep though, it is quite normal to move around. As long as he is active during the daytime, he should be fine.

A lot of my friends have also told us not too worry too much about it. And they've said the same thing actually, that as long as he's active and isn't lethargic, then all's fine. We actually had also taken photos of him sleeping in different positions.

The photos would make very good memories later on. I wonder if you sleep like that as a kid, would you grow out of it?

no im not.. hahahha im sure im not..:) But my sister do. I always kick her when she is sleeping with me.she'll be in floor by morning. Because when i dont, her giant foot and wooden legs will be in my face ..

That is so funny! Suppose you put paint on her foot and give her the evidence on your face in the morning? Poor sis, she is being kicked for something she can't control, maybe you should get another bed.
• Singapore

Of course she will deny! I will too So she comes in occasionally? That's not too bad. I thought it was a permanent arrangement.

That was soo funny... i still giggle when i tease her. she comes not often in house so she wanted to sleep with me.. She lived alone near where she worked, i barely imagine how she looks like in her bed. :) hahaha..

I am also a flipper like your friend. As they say, I kept on changing positions while sleeping. The only difference is that if I almost fall to the floor, I immediately wake up and go back to the correct position.

Sounds like you have some automatic mechanism inside you that warns you of danger. That's a reflex?
• Singapore
25 Feb 12
Your body must be real flexible after all that flipping and bending back to the same position!

I believe they considered that as reflex. So even though I tend to have acrobatic moves during sleeping, I've never experienced falling on the floor. It's usually in the morning that I found my blanket and/or pillows on the floor.

haha that could be dangerous, especially if she was sleeping away from home in an unfamiliar place, she could end up anywhere.
• Singapore

Yes I have heard many funny sleeping stories from her, there are many hilarious ones but luckily she hasn't met with any danger so far. She may need to tie herself to the bedpost if she goes travelling, hoo hoo...

I always turn from one side to another while sleeping and I sleep pretty hard but I've never turned a 180, I do have friends and family members that, once asleep are all over the place without ever waking up and I'm amazed at the stories I've heard. Don't know how they do it but I wonder about setting up a night cam to watch myself and my spouse just to see how we sleep and what we do while asleep. I have however walked in my sleep to the point of going out to stand at my childs bus stop (at our mailbox at the end of the driveway)
• Singapore
24 Feb 12
That sounds quite dangerous! Have you ever found out the cause of this sleepwalk? Is it due to stress or something similar. Good idea about the night cam, I would not want to catch myself salivating!

No, I have never had that kind of experience. It does sound really scary to be your friend though. Because then you may have some kind of brain or head damage when you fall down. I guess she must be a real deep sleeper. I have never fallen out of the bed before when I am asleep. But I do sometimes flip onto the side or move up a little on the bed when I am asleep. Then the next morning I wouldn't remember how.
• Singapore
25 Feb 12
Yeah, I should advise her to line her floor with carpet or cushions, something soft to break her fall. Wait, I think she sleeps on the floor now to prevent further accidents, smart choice right? It's quite normal to move around a bit when one sleep. We seldom remember.

It is really funny experience of your friend. I hear about some like this one but I personally never had such experience. And that experiences of my friends were connected with parying, and drinking. After that, everything can happen. I remember once I stayed sleeping like sitting on the bed, without wakeing up almost all night. But it was just once in my life :-)).

You must be real tired that time to do that, is it uncomfortable when you wake up that you need to sleep again? People do crazy things when they are drunk, flipping in their sleep should be the least of them.

wow thats sound scary. does your friend have a habit of rolling over like this? this story makes you understand that the same thing could have happen to you too. no one nows what happens with himself while he is sleeping.

I think that was the most dramatic experience she had, of course she has many other funny ones but none like this. I remember this story because it made a deep impression. Who could forgot a story like that right? I have always been told by my family that I am a "good" sleeper. How about yourself?
