Yesterday when I was at work I found out that one of the girls I work with was fired the day before. She was really nice and I enjoyed talking to her when the store was slow and we had nothing to do. But the thing is, she hardly ever worked or did anything and the managers didn't like that at all. So I guess they finally fired her.
I also found out that there are plans to fire 3 more of the associates but none of us knows who they're going to be. I'm a bit nervous because I'm a seasonal hire and I could potentially be one of the 3.
I hope things happen soon because I just want it to be over already. I'll be sad for whoever it is that gets fired because a lot of the girls I work with are really nice and I enjoy working with them.
I really hope I don't lose my job though...

one way to get fired is talking with each other when the store is slow, just my one cent piece advice, always find something to do even when business is slow cause that's company time, just do anything especially when supervisors or bosses are around, you will have a good chance of keeping your job

Normally I don't talk, it's only when managers aren't around. Most of the time I am doing something productive and even if I talk I'm still working on fixing something in the store.
These next weeks I'm going to have to work extra hard though and show that I'm useful enough to keep.

good, yeah that's the way, you hit it right, productivity,it's what business is looking for especially at this difficult times, perhaps it lessens or eliminates the chances of you being one of the next 3 or so..., yes good luck and wish you the best on your work

I hate to say it but if you aren't pulling your weight your going to be let go, and you said yourself that one of your co-workers was doing nothing. I would take this opportunity to be busy, take initiative and do the crap work no one else wants to do. We all have to start from somewhere and usually its the ground up. Good luck!

Before I responded, I checked your last comment here. I was hoping that I wouldn't see any news here of you getting fired.
I hope not!
I know you're already going through a difficult time right now with your boyfriend leaving. And a good steady job would help keep your mind off 'things'.

Exactly! Honestly, I wouldn't mind too much if I lost my job and my boyfriend was still here. But the fact that he's leaving makes me want to keep my job even more so I'll have something to do when he's gone.
The idea really started bothering me so I got up the nerve and asked one of the supervisors that's really close to us and talks to us like we're normal people instead of lowly workers. Since she knew who they were talking about getting rid of, I asked her if I was ok since I had heard about the rumors. She told me that I was fine and if something were to happen, she would tell me ahead of time so I wasn't blind-sided. However, she did tell me that this one girl might get fired and it's someone I've known for a few years before work. She tells major lies and she even tries to lie to me about my boyfriend, and she's even cried at work saying her dad had a heart attack and she had to leave (her dad was fine the whole time). As bad as I'd feel about her getting fired, Ireally don't want to tell her because she's just an unpleasant person to be around and I can't say I'd be sad if I didn't have to work with her anymore

Apparently they had a reason that they fired her, even if it doesn't seem fair, yes it's sad I know.
Sometimes companies fire people because they have less money to pay their employees than before. I think you still should work hard and do your best, so that you become someone they want to keep.

Being nice is good for relations, not working is bad for works (duh).
That's not a meeting place where you have to show your social skills, but a job in which you have to work, if that girl didn't do that, it's more than right that she got fired, she totally deserved it.
I can guess how you feel, but think this: There's only one thing you can do: Work as much and as good as you can.
That's the only thing you can do to prevent firing to happen to you, if you work hard and you still get fired, you'll feel bad, but not as much because you know you tried your best and you could do nothing else to prevent it.
Good luck, and if the worse happens, don't give up and keep trying to do your best, that's the most important thing.

I completely understand why she was fired, it's just sad to see a friend leave. I think I'll be extra friendly to the managers now and work as hard as I can and I guess we'll just see what happens. ..

If it's a friend then you can see her outside the job or have other activities with her outside the job (gym?)

Speaking as someone who worked in retail for a long time, and spent some time as a manager, the most productive workers are the ones they keep unless one of the workers is either sleeping with the owner or manager or is related to someone who does. Also, fulltimers are often kept and temporary help is let go first -- unless the manager gets sick of paying some of them commissions and just keeps the best one and fills the rest of the slots with parttimer like you.
Managers like people to are good at unselling to customers and who treat them wel so they will want to come back. One shouldn't be pushy, but if you see a customer is one who enjoys the shopping experience, you might tactfully suggest something that would look really great with what a customer is about to buy. Managers love that.
