If We Look for the Good....

The other day, I responded to a discussion with something "lifted" from the Disney movie, Pollyanna. Now, normally I am not the Pollyanna-ish type. Most who know me would say the same. Yet, one thing from the movie has always stuck with me, because it's also always been part of my own, personal philosophy on life and people. And, I am not quoting it directly, but it's something to the tune of, "If we look for the good - we'll find it.".
How many believe this to be true? As a social worker, I worked with some children in the past with horrific behavior problems. How was it possible to get them to learn and display correct, acceptable behavior? By looking for the tiniest thing that could be considered "good" - even if it was not shouting for half a minute - and rewarding it. Eventually, the "good" behavior increased with the expectation of the reward. Over time, the reward became inconsequential - because it became internalized. The children did well, because they felt better inside doing so.

I believe that this is true. Look for the good and it will show itself, it might take some hard work but it's always there. This is to do not with just the good in people but the good in life, the good in any situation. I've had some "hard" moments in my life but I've noticed everytime I've looked for the good in it, the good showed itself and the bad disappeared, or was inconsequential. Everytime I focused on the bad - the negative - it reared it's ugly head and I had a difficult time.
It's words to live by - Good is out there, chase it, don't wait for it to come to you. -.

You are right, SomeCowgirl. Not just with people, but in all things to look for the good. And I've done the same as you - when circumstances all around seem bad and depressing and as if there is no where to go but down - to look for and find the one positive in all - whether it's something learned, or knowing that tomorrow will be different - it can bring you up and out!

yes i do believe in this because this thinking of mine comes from my practice.God is always with us but we can not able to see them unless we want.but when we are looking for good with pure heart then we will see that and this experience is very remember-able for life time.
