My neighbor was telling me about this a few days back & I thought she had either lost her mind or misunderstood...either of which is possible with her!!! It bothered me to the point I just had to search to see if it was true & sure enough... http://charlotte.cbslocal.com/2012/02/24/man-charged-with-chopping-off-friends-hand-for-insurance-money A man from the eastern part of South Carolina has been charged with defrauding an insurance company by cutting off his friend's hand & filing a false claims by saying it was an accident. He & a friend together cut off the hand of another friend. My first thought...WHY would they even consider... My second thought...WHY would the guy agree to have his hand cut off??? All insurance involved paid out only a total of $670,000. That is NOT enough money to even entertain the thought!!! I know you weren't there & don't know the actual answer to my question; but here goes... WTF would make someone even consider having their hand cut off & what would make a friend actually do it???

Honestly this just goes back to any stupid scam stunt people try. They are greedy and / or desperate. Now the ones at the magnitude of stupidity, to cut a friend's hand off I just can't completely understand. How are they sure that it will work? Obviously it didn't and now they have to pay for it and the guy who got his hand cut off I am sure is regretting it. There are more honest ways to get money, why do people do the stupidest things for pocket change?

I wonder if the idiot saying OK, cut it off was crazy or what??? I know I wouldn't even consider it for $1 billion dollars & I sure wouldn't for less than a million!!! There's no mention of them being drunk at the time. For the life if me, I just can't get it to make any sense to me!!!

I wonder if the man with one hand will do jail time? I wonder if he got drunk to have it cut off? I mean... Owwwwww! How did he just let them do it? That is freaking crazy!

I've read several different reports of this & NONE of them mention him being drunk. As a matter of fact, they don't mention the other 2 men even being prosecuted. My other thought is WHY did it take 2 friends to cut it off if he was a willing participant???

When you think you have seen and heard of everything, someone comes along with some stupid scheme like this! This was too stupid not to share. I had to put it on my facebook! Like WTF??? That is just nuts! Hope he didn't cut off his dominant hand... I'm thinking of all kinds of trouble he will have... He can't clap his hands.. Might not be able to blow his nose if he needs 2 hands Might not be able to wipe his own butt if he cut off the wrong hand! This is nuts! I've not heard of this one.

This is so freakin insane that I just can't make any sense out of it!!! Over the years I've been friends with some pretty crazy people & NEVER once did anybody even joke about doing something this crazy!!! There are soooo many things that he took for granted before this that reality will slap him in the face with that it won't be funny for long!!! I just wish somebody would interview him so I could hear his side of this scheme!!!

I'm not surprised. Our culture has become obsessed with material goods. After all, the media tells us all the time (through movies, TV shows, commercials, etc.) that money will make us happy, respected and loved. Money is all that matters. If you have money you can have good looks, a nice house, impress people and be everything you want to be. It's a culture of the superficial, of greed and avarice. It's only natural that something like this would happen. We are presented with fictional works every day of people getting money through dishonest means and living happily ever after. Why wouldn't they think they could get away with it and have great lives?

Maybe I can't understand any of what happened simply because I don't think that way!!! I have absolutely NO desire for tons of money!!! I just want enough to live comfortably, supply my needs NOT my wants!!! Most of the rich people I know live a little bit more comfortable than I do, but there ain't one of them that's any happier!!!

Sounds like those kind of friends that influence each other in negative ways for sure. I say that lightly but you know that these guys have got together and concocted a most ridiculous plan..for what? For the money. Crazy! Too even consider removing a part of your body for the money! It is amazing the lengths that people will go to for money sometimes.

Every time I think I've heard the craziest thing ever....there's a new story!!! I do hope this one is the wackiest to come out for a while!!! I also like to think this proves my sanity as it is something so far out there that I'd NEVER even consider it!!!

I always used to say...I'd give my right arm if I really wanted something. Yet I would have NEVER literally cut off my right arm for anything that I wanted. These 3 men are obviously 1 brick shy of a load. As much as I wonder why the 2 friends cut his hand off, I wonder even MORE what made him think his hand was only worth $670,000??? There are soooo many things we need both hands for in order to get through life!!! Even if it's not the dominant hand, if you pay attention the other hand serves a very useful purpose!!!

Wow!! Personally this is unreal, and who would ever consider doing something like this is beyond me. I know that people do Stupid stuff sometimes, but this is beyond that, and why would you ever allow someone to do something like this? Personally I hope the 2 who created the idea of this get in Big trouble, and more people should be made aware of what in reality this really can do to someone.

No kidding. This is crazy but desperate people do desperate things. If this scheme was all about money, and it sounds as though this was the motive, I don't think removing a hand from a friend is the way to go. It's pretty sick and so sad. I wonder if the guy who lost his hand will be able to collect disability. Have no idea if there are exceptions in this kind of case. I agree with you, it's bizarre and I, too, say WTF!

I would have to say that both of them are just sick puppies! I could not phantom cutting my hand off nor anyone else's hand for that matter. Perhaps if their hand was stuck in something and they were in a life threatening situation... ok cut off the hand to save the person but other than that.... nah. Perhaps the handless person decided that he would cut off his hand get the insurance money and then go on disability or something? The person cutting off the hand must have been promised some sort of monetary gain from it. Both of them are suckers to the third degree.
