Why don't people just walk more?

Everybody seems to have a vehicle these days. Having a vehicle is something good but when people do have vehicle, they tend to rely on them too much. In my campus, people drives to the cafeteria even though it is only a 5 to 10 minutes walk from the hostel. Why not walk more as sometimes to destination is just within walking distance and it is good for your health and the traffic too?

I guess people rely on the convenience of transportation instead of walking. I don't see many people walking around here either. I guess they are afraid of getting hurt, or also maybe of what people may think. Of course if you have the money why not drive I guess.

I love walking, and the amount of money I have saved by not getting the bus into town, its a 25 minute walk there and 25 minute walk back, but come rain or shine I will still walk, it's the freedom of being out in the open air, it's also good exercise. Yet I know some people to take their car just to get a paper or when they could walk for 10 minutes! It's crazy. Even as a child I remember walking everywhere, so I guess it's second nature for me just to walk, some people see a ten minute walk a marathon.

I also think it is good to walking. I think walking helps to save money on the gas and petrol and also helps to keep oneself healthy. Now a days people do not walk even to the shorter distances and try to use their vehicle. I think when people walk more they will be healthy. I will also try to walk on the shorter distances life.

I also think there are quite many people around who don' like to walk, even for a short distance. When we go shopping centers, most of my friends always want to park their car as nearer to the entrance as possible, so they can walk less. There is a park near my house, I always bring my son there for jogging and also playing in the playground, we usually walk there. I find many people like to drive there, even though they stay near by. I am always wondering, since they want to go to the park for exercise, why not walk to the park to exercise extra a bit?
I also encourage climbing the staircase if there are only one or two floors you need to go, it's not only to exercise, it's saving the resources, it's more environmental friendly. As you said, if we can walk, then we don't need to drive, it will not cause the traffic jam, and also it's more environmental friendly.

well, i think it has a lot to do with time constraints, living in the subburbs (you have to drive to go almost anywhere) and convenience. its just not convenient to walk anymore. i try to walk each day now that the weather is starting to become nicer.

Yeah ! That's a great topic !
Among my friends,I'm the only one who enjoy walking.
When we're going downtown, they always want to take the bus ! Downtown is only a 10 min walk !
Are people getting lazier or what ? o.0

yes I agree with you that we should walk small distance rather than using vehicle for small distance travels . I believe that people are getting more and more lazy these days that's why they tend to avoid walking which is not only wrong but also harmful for heath .We must walk small distance daily to stay fit.

I agree with you. It's way better to walk a few meters instead of using your car just to go to a grocery store near you or something like that. I really think that cars are meant for long travels and not for short distance travels. Too much cars on the road lead to traffic, pollution and a lot other things. As for me, I usually walk from office to my house since it's about a 30-minute walk. It's helpful since it keeps me healthier and since I don't have that much exercise. But, if I get to wake up early in the morning where there's not much vehicles yet on the road, I also walk going to work in a moderate way just to get some fresh air while I get to the park near the office. It's invigorating and refreshing to walk and helps keep me from gaining too much weight. I do recommend walking especially if the distance is short enough for anyone to walk to.

I think it depends on where you live and how much time you have. If you are always in a hurry, if time is precious and you have many appointments a day walking takes just too much time.
If I stay with my husband (in Africa) I always walk even if people say it's way too much to walk. I don't care to walk over for 1-4 hours. No need to take a cab or bushcab for me. I don't have a car or bike over there. Fact is I do have the time to walk for so many hours to get somewhere. I don't have that time in my country.

I think it depends on where you live. I live in a small town where people think there is something wrong if you're walking - you're car is broken down or you don't have money for the bus. But in a bigger city, everyone walks because it's sometimes faster than trying to catch a cab or, heavens forbid, trying to find a place to park.

I don't know. But I know that I drive when I could walk. Like someone else said, we are all so BUSY and caught up in our lives that sometimes we forget to stop and do what's logical, or stop and smell the roses, I guess you could say. I need to start walking more. I live in a city, so I'm about 4 city blocks from a store. Of course, when you're going to get groceries or something, it's really inconvenient to try to carry all those groceries home without having a car. And it can also be annoying because women tend to get hit on by guys when walking in the neighborhood I live in. Not good. But I definitely want to start walking sometime in the near future, you're right, we should all do this whenever we can. We'd save money AND get exercise - probably something that all of us need right now. Once gas goes up to $4/ a gallon like they were talking, you can bet either I'll start walking or start biking more often.

I have noticed that also, and I too had wondered why there are people who would rather drive to a nearby mart or convenience store instead of just walking. Where I live, the neighborhood mart is less than a kilometer away from the residential houses, and people would still drive just to buy a single piece of item. It's not only a waste of gasoline, but it adds to our already polluted world. I know that cars are a necessity, but there are instances wherein we could do away with it and just walk.

These are some of the things that contributes to unhealthy life style. I enjoy walking myself and I think driving a car for 5 or 10 minutes distance just to go to a cafeteria, is just a prove of how lazy most people have become.
