Have you ever spent a boat load of money for a weekend trip?

I'm trying to plan a trip for this coming summer for my husband and I. As I started calculating things it seems as if everything keeps going up.:) I'm hoping that if everything goes well we can do it. But it's only for a weekend and it's going to cost so much money. I'm not planning for us to go out of the country or fly anywhere and it's still costing a lot. The tickets for two events is what is really killing me, then theres the gas, hotel stay, eating, etc. When you take trips or weekend trips how do you feel about the price of it? Afterwards are you happy you were able to do it?

If it is only a local travel and only for the weekend, I don't spend that much money. I always keep it to a minimum. I will try to save what I can for my future international trips. If we do had a weekend getaway that would cost that much, most probably it is my aunt's or my parent's treat. hehehe...

Lol, yeah that is nice that your parent's and your aunt treat you to trips that is great. I didn't think that it would cost so much for this weekend trip. But as I started calculating everything it just keeps adding up. I hope that we can still take this trip because even though it will cost a lot it will be worth it. We haven't been on a vacation in three years. So all that time we didn't have money to take one. So if we would have taken one each year it would have just equaled itself out. Since we didn't I don't feel that bad about going. I'm hoping that next year or the year after we will be able to take a cruise. I would love to go on a cruise so I have to just keep saving for it.

As much as possible, we try to keep the costs down whenever we travel. But we do save extra travel money in case of emergency or if we can't really cut down the expenses. Usually what we do is, if we can't really cut down the price of a plane ticket/ expense for gas for the car, we cut down on food cost since its something we can control. We also try to look for a cheaper alternative for a hotel stay if possible. As long as we enjoy each others company, we are okay.

That is a good thing to do. That is exactly what I'm trying to do. Since I know we are going to have to travel for four hours and that the tickets are a set price I have to cut down on our food and hotel stay. So I've looked up restaurants and plan to get gift cards for them ahead of time. This will prevent me from spending the money on other little things now until we leave. Thanks for sharing your experience it is very helpful to see what others do.

Have you thought of trying to offset the cost of some of the gas by trying to earn giftcards for gas on websites? I know your in the US, as it says on your profile, so it's not tht hard for you to do. If you can't earn cards for gas, you could always try to earn them for walmrt, or other stores you normally shop so that you can put more money towards your trip. The cost of things really has gone up and gas can be a killer, especially if you plan to go around the time people mostly travel, it gets worse!
Does the hotel you are going to stay at offer rewards? If you travel a bit, or stay at hotels a bit, then finding one that does might be worth it for the future.

Thanks so much for hadn't thought about websites for gas cards and walmart. Do you know of any that are good? That would really help. I was able to find a hotel that is the cheapest for the area and that still has good reviews. I hope that I'm able to pull this off. My brother in law went to a concert the other night and my husband started talking about how it would be go. He made the comment that if he had the money he would get certain seats. Unfortunately the seats that he mentioned I can't get. There a $1000 per person. But I'm trying to do my best.

My husband and I am going on a weekend trip next weekend. We have rented a small apartment in a town called and Bogense. The apartment is relatively expensive, because there were no apartments for two people, and we had to rent a place for 6 people. It looks like a very nice place and I look forward to spending the weekend there. We are going to have dinner at an old inn in that town, so that will also a be quite expensive, but we probably aren't going to travel much this year, so we are going to enjoy that weekend a lot.
Last year we went on a weekend trip to a town called Haderslev. The hotel where we stayed was also relatively expensive and we had to spend money on gas, too, because it is not close to our home. It wasn't a cheap weekend, but I still don't regret the money that we spent on it, because we had a really great time, and I think that it was worth the money.

Thanks for sharing with me. That makes me feel so much better. I start to feel bad about it because I think about what we could be using the money for. But then I remind myself that we haven't taken a trip at all in the last three years and we really could use this time together as a couple. So that makes me feel justified in the expense of this trip. I'm glad that you enjoy your trips as well. It is so nice to be able to get out of town every now and then and have a good time.

I agree with you that weekend trips can also be very costly but wheneve I plan for a trip or vacation I make sure that it is within my budget so that I don't have to stress about paying off the money for it. As for your weekend trip, make sure that you plan everything well ahead of time and try to make it within your budget so that you don't worry or stress over it. Then just enjoy your trip, have lots of fun and make the most out of it...

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me. Yeah I will work on making sure that everything is planned well. And if I can pull everything off to where it's not financially out of our reach I will go for it and enjoy it. I hope though that time doesn't go by fast because I want us to enjoy it. We haven't taken a trip in three years so this will be nice for us.

Thanks. I hope that it all will work out. I will give it time and see if I can save. Perhaps all of my time on mylot will help. Maybe I can set that aside for the trip. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who seems to spend a boat load on a weekend trip. I guess it equals itself out this is the first trip we've taken in three years.

I'm not actually frugal when it comes to spending on vacations but I am however practical. I'm aware of the state of my finances and I only spend on a vacation that fits into our budget even if it's only a weekend trip. It could go over just a bit but no too way overboard. I've experienced having spent too much on a vacation, and although the vacation itself was so great, the reality of having spent way off my budget had really bitten me, and it could really spoil a great vacation afterward, so I've learned to not overspend on one anymore.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I mean I'm trying my best to cut corners for everything else.Since I know the tickets are going to cost an arm and a leg. Like for the hotel we are staying at it will be pretty cheap. And I'm trying to find gift cards for dinner, etc. So I hope it will all work out. And if I can save my mylot earnings I can use that for gas and the toll road. So I will have to work hard at it.

I love to travel, but I seldom go anywhere that is not very near or where friends or family live for just a weekend. But if you are going to see a special show or something like that, maybe it is worth it. In my country, I travel a lot in buses. They are much cheaper for one or two people than the cost of gas and tolls.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me. I understand not traveling very far. Times are just too hard and everything is so expensive. We haven't went on a trip in three years. And I'm still not sure if I will be able to pull this one off. I'm pinching my pennies and I will just try and see if I can do it. If not then I will have to plan something small for later this year or next year.

Yes with all there is to do for a weekend trip it can get costly. Or any trip by car and flying and hotels, eating, driving the car around etc.
Thats why my husband and I opt for a Cruise. We are talking about our next one which will be alaska and we plan on taking a year and half to pay for it.
We also have to fly so there will be that charge which we generally don't have as we have a lot of ports here in our state of Florida.
But seeing alaska has been a dream of mine so we are not going on one of the cheaper cruises this time.
While Carnival cruises can have some decent prices, this is one cruise we really want to make valuble time of on the ship to see all the beauty of alaska.
I like the idea of cruising because everything is paid upfront. So unless you want to be extravagant and eat at one of the luxurious restaurants I can forgo those to save money after boarding a ship.
There is always enough food available most of the time anyway.
We have cut a lot of expenses doing a cruise. There is nothing more frustrating to me than to try to figure out where to eat and having to jump back in the car and find the place then get back to your hotel room.
Hope your trip turns out well for you.
You will have to let us know what you did while you were gone.
I won't be cruising to Alaska til next september 2013.
Have a wonderful time in whatever you decide to do.

That is so awesome. I would love to go on a cruise some day. If I could I would use the money for this trip for a cruise. But at this time my daughter is too young for us to be gone for a week and that's how long I would like to go on a cruise for the first time. Especially since we will have to fly to the port area anyway. I think cruises as well offer such a great deal. You will have a great time going to Alaska. My husband would love a cruise like that. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me.
