Flipflops once again

It's almost summertime and again flipflops are once more attracting lots of buyers. I'm really amazed at how branding and pricing could change the outlook of people. I mean, when I was a kid, fliplops are meant to be worn only at home or when you're going to the beach. And even then, you just pack your flipflops with you and wear them only when you're actually on the beach itself. Some people are even embarrassed to wear flipflops in public. Yet now it has become some sort of status symbol for a lot of people and they would pay top dollar just to purchase one.

Nowadays it is becoming a new trend that wearing flipflops is really cool. At times I would rather be in a comfortable situation rather than wearing a decent shoes then then it will hurt my foot. But case to case basis of course, we must have sense of decency at the same time on where to wear the flip flops and not. I mean for example if we are in semi formal parties of course we are not going to wear flip flops as part of our respect to them. Even in schools we are not suppose to wear it.

Most expensive brands are really superior in quality compared to the cheaper-priced ones. Although I have a pair of flipflops that are made in Thailand that only cost less than $3 and I still wear them today. It's almost six years when I bought it. Actually, I have nothing against flipflops. They are indeed very comfortable to wear (although I prefer sandals-type better). I just feel sad for some teenagers who would have to shell out quite a big amount just to be "fashionably in" with their peers.

And yeah one more thing. Sometimes wearing expensive flip flops has an advantage it depends on the brand and the quality. For this I would really prefer the Speedo that I bought it for $20 if converted from Philippine Peso. I have been wearing that for almost more than 5 years and you know what it is still good and the stability is very strong. Even if I bend it the quality is really good.

I've always worn some sort of flipflop since I was a kid. It did not matter where you wore them, it's cheap footwear to keep your feet cool. Of course there are ones that have alot of decoration on them and have become quite dressy that people now wear them with summer dresses.

The branded flipflops may be quite expensive but they are definitely more durable than the cheaper ones. One time there was a sale at the mall for a popular brand of flipflops so I bought one just because it was on sale. That was when I noticed that it was really durable. That pair is still alive and has been with me for more than a year now. It seems that it never wears down. Compared to the other flipflops I bought before that become thin after a few months of use. So I can just say that the branded flipflops have more value for their price.

That's true, but I also know some lesser-priced flipflops that could give these branded ones a run for their money when it comes to durability. I for one bought a relatively unknown brand that's made in Thailand which I still wear today, more than five years since I bought it But yeah, I've also bought other cheap flipflops and after only a few months, the bands snapped. Oh, well, if you have the money, sometimes it's still best to buy those branded expensive ones

I have a collection of flipflops. From Havs to Nike to Fitflop. Fitflop is my most expensive one and now i have two. I wish to have more Fitflops though, they're just so comfy.
Yeah i must agree with you, it has now become a fashion style similar to that of a shoe. But i'm glad it became like that because i don't actually like high heeled shoes.

And it all started because of HAVAIANAS and followed by other brands. I used to go gaga over them but then I realized that I'm paying too much for it. I decided to purchase some of Grendha's product since the price is much more worth it. The sandals look nice :)

I also think these branded flipflops are a bit overpriced. I know they're durable enough and some of them do come in neat designs, but I've seen some lesser known brands that I think have the same quality, but the cost way cheaper. I guess we really do pay for a brand's name :)

I know what you mean and even I am amazed with people who come to work wearing flipflops. When I was younger, you were allowed to wear flipflops if you were going to the market because your shoes would get dirty. But not when you are going to work or the mall. And it is silly when I see people buying flipflops that cost more than shoes. For them its not the price but the name and the so-called status symbol of being seen wearing such expensive flipflops. I have never worn flipflops to work, but admittedly I sometimes wear them when I go to the mall because they are more comfortable. But I don't buy those very expensive brands. The regular ones (P79 or less) will do for me.

I think flipflops are pretty but they are not for me :( I mean when i wear them, i feel really uncomfortable and can not walk in them at all. The last time I wore a flipflop I got a bruise in one of my feet and another one bleeded seriously. So no flipflops for me :(

I'm a bit amazed that flip-flops are still in fashion to be honest. Even though many people spend a fortune on pretty and glittery flip-flops, I don't know if they really fall in the 'elegant' category... as you can tell someone is wearing them without looking at her feet, just from the sound :) Yet many people wear them in the offices. It can look great and I have no problems with those who wear them, but not something I would wear in public.
I was also grown up learning that flip-flops are meant to be worn on the beach or at home.

My mom always took her flipflops off and put on tennis shoes before going anywhere away from home. She would let me wear them to go shopping, etc. We didn't live near a beach, but we went to the swimming pool almost every day in the summertime. We walked to the pool in our flipflops.
Here is a piece of trivia: In the 60's and 70's flipflops were called thongs.

Thanks for the trivia :) When I was a kid in the very early '80s, I just call them slippers and I wouldn't go outside of our neighborhood wearing them. Like your mom, I'd slip into a pair of sneakers if I knew I was going somewhere outside our neighborhood.

I know what you mean... When I was little, flipflops were like the cheapest form of footwear. So you wouldn't want to wear them in public because you'll be seen as if you cannot afford pair of decend sandals or shoes. But today's flipflops are no longer that; the ones that supposedly help you walking more comfortably (fitflops?) or branded ones (billabongs, havanas?) are quite expensive. So if you got them, you would want to show them off in public .
