Renting vs Owning

My husband and I have been at a disagreement about putting our house up for sale, for one of those short sales that the banks are doing for financially strapped individuals. My husband was working massive hours and is now cut back to 40 hrs, and I am a stay at home mom. We can't afford for me to go get a job, because my qualifications aren't the greatest to get a good full time job. So I would be basically paying to be away from my kids, and nothing towards the bills. I feel tied down, and without knowing what's going to happen with his job, I want to beable to move at a moments notice if we have to. And owning a home we cannot do that. So I was wondering, do you rent or own your place of residence? And with the situation you are in would you rather try the other route?

Renting is like throwing money down the drain, is your house large enough to have the kids share a room and rent the other out to a lodger? all the best urban

Yes, my house is large enough for the kids to share a room. But I am not one to just let someone come in off the streets and stay here. Also, I have done the friend living here thing before and that was a mistake. You come to head when they don't want to follow through with the initial agreement. I lost a great friend because of this. As far as throwing money down the drain, I understand that. But with the economy this way and not knowing what is around the next corner, I just feel that it would be easier to up and move without having a mortgage under our nose. I want us to beable to provide for our children and have a roof over their head. And in my opinion with having to be strapped in one place with a mortgage it doesn't give any lee-way for moving for a job if it's needed.
