A dishwasher, also a mom of a college boy, was fired because she brought the leftover home for her son to eat from her workplace-a five-star hotel.According to the hotel rule, the leftovers must be deserted and they don't allow their staff to eat them.
The hotel claimed that the leftovers are also the property of the hotel. And the mother's behavior was actually stealing from the hotel.
It triggered a controversy as many Chinese netizens think it is a waste not to utilize the buffet leftovers.
But the hotel said to let staff use the buffet leftovers will cause their managerial problems.

i think it's sad that someone could work at a place making so much money couldn't afford to give their employees a meal or two. it's cruel to make people serve food all today to rich people and tell them they can't eat it, then make them through it away. "well, they are getting paid", you say, but we all know that is the joke about it. if people were getting paid enough, they wouldn't have to try to take food home. that's crazy. for all you slave, you should get food, or enough to eat when you get with your pay check (after you pay your bills).

Although the mom is deserving pity, rules are rules. I suggest the hotel figure out a better way to dispose leftovers, such as give them to those who need them. Hope the mom find another job soon.

well, they say that they can't throw give away the food to the needy because of contamination risk. they say that by the time it gets to said people, the food may not be the right temperature. people may take the food home, not refrig it, get sick possibly and say they want to sue the people who gave it to them. sounds good, but i still smell an excuse and it smell like poo. i still think there are ways around that, like give out a disclaimer each time that the food is no longer consider fresh but resturant standards and keep instructed to eat or refrigerate/throw away after a couple of days.

What a harsh ruling that hotel is enforcing. Yes, let's say that it's their money they have bought for it to cook and served it for a profit but they are leftover foods.Do they mean, they will just throw or waste it. If their employee can use it, why not let them instead of going to waste.Well, I guess as you have said it can cause a problem to their superior or manager, I don't know but for me, it's not fair.

Yes I think that is so stupid. It is very sad that companies have to be that way. It really isn't that smart. The way they are acting shows that they are happy to have a lot of food wasted. It makes me really angry. I hope that she is able to find another job. It's unfortunate that she has lost her job for that reason.

Hi there espoir,
This is really sad since it is not only wasteful but the loss of wage was imminent, this has been going on for years and some of my more poorer countrymen even try to get this food from the trash and just boil them for some kind of safety measure. But for a company to not let employees take food that is left over is just wrong and again wasteful and they didn't have to fire the woman that is just overkill on there part.

Well it wasent like she was taking the leftover food off peoples plates that were eaten upon and taking that food home to her kids. That would be disgusting. She was taking the food home at the end of the night that would be thrown out. Perfectly good food going to waste bothers me. I think it should be allowed at the end of the night that if the food is going to be thrown out and isnt contaminated like off peoples eaten plates that the employees should be allowed to take it home and make use of it.

There are a lot of places that do this, and it bothers me that these places would rather throw food out rather than pass it out, or give it to people in need. I did work at a place that had a deli and they used to pass out what was left. Once, a woman had sued complaining that she was poisoned from the food, and it made her sick, so they stopped passing out what was going to be thrown out. But that kind of situation is rare. She was trying to make a quick buck. I can see how companies do not want lawsuits after them from the risk they took, but wasting food when someone who is actually hungry could eat it, that's not good.

Rule is rule. I think it is also one of thing to prevent disease, or something but well, if you are going to work for that establishment you need to follow rules. If you are thinking to break it, make sure that they are not going to caught you. I know very well that it's like a waste of food or something, I agree!
