I think the Oscar Rewards is sometimes unfair since it seems science fiction movies seldom will win any rewards from it. I don't agree that the unpopular movies shall be good and meaningful movies. The science fiction or comedy movies are also good. Why not they can't win it?

Awards..not rewards.
anyway..just like in Action movies..scifi or those plenty of special effects kinda movie dont really have much acting..or emotion or something groundbreakingly new..to actually win an award..
though some lousy movie..like Lord of The ring..won the oscar for best picture..
equalling those of titanic..and Ben hur..11 oscars won..
since the day they made LOTR won best picture..i noticed from that moment..something is wrong with the academy's members..
just like yesterday..i know WAR HORSE i way better movie..but didnt win anything at all.. Hugo is almost scifi..won several awards..there u go.. a scifi.
and TIN TIN didnt even nominated for animated feature category.alas in definitely is the greatest animated technology ever..!!

hi rafi,
i didnt even remember that LOTR won best picture, it did??.. anyway.. i think it also depends on the kinds of movies that was produced / played in the cinemas in the competition year - cant remember what movies LOTR was up against, tho'..
and TIN TIN... yeah.. that one should have been in the Best Animation - i loved that one..

If you think about it Sci-Fi movies don't have the acting that the ones that win do. Sci-fi and comedy are usually not that well acted and alot of times are formula stories. Not much to get excited about. Transformers was up for an award this year but Yugo beat them out.

Simple. The Academy prefers dramas to comedies and Sci Fi. Back when the movies were young, Sci Fi films were cheaply made , the type of light fare for kids. Nowadays there seems to be two type of films, the blockbusters , that seem to be Sci Fi and Comedies and the Oscar type of films. They are deep dramas.Every once in a while a performance in a comedy gets a supporting acting Oscar but that is about it.

winning the Oscar takes a lot of criteria into consideration.. not just the 'entertainment value'.. i agree most of the 'blockbuster' sci-fi movies, normally dont get to win the Grand Best Movie awards - but they do win in their stronger categories - editing, sound effect, special effects, etc.. i dont find the winner of the Best Movie Awards really entertaining as well, but i will leave that to the professional juries to decide.. i will just pick which movie to pay for to watch..

The people who pick out who is nominated, and who wins the awards, is the people of Hollywood. Anyone who works for a major studio, in any way, has a vote for who will win each award... and they're not given a list of just the top 5 movies, they're given a massive list of hundreds of movies, and it's whichever ones get the most votes that go up for nominations, and the top one wins.
Science fiction movies usually go far more for the visual effects and sound, then for performances or directing. This is why ones like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers, and Real Steel, were up for awards in those categories. Comedies don't mean much to the oscar crowds, because not nearly as much work and effort goes into them, they're just fun movies. Some have gotten awards, like Little Miss Sunshine or Juno or Bridesmaids, those were comedies with much more too them then just cheap laughs, and the got nominations, and even won some awards.
Good movies win. If you want to see votes by the watchers, then you should watch the MTV movie awards, that would be more up your alley.

yes, most oscar awards is conferred to literary films. When it comes to this question, different people have different views. everyone has his own taste.
there are so many good movies, like you said, action movies or comedy, but there is only one oscar.
