Hello myLotters! I'm actually asking for a friend. Out of the blue, she asked this question and I was totally clueless. I want to search for it on the net but I also want to find out if I'm just the only one clueless on this topic. So, are people born on february 29 LEGALLY allowed to count their age every four years or are they allowed to choose either march 1 or february 28?

Well , in my country , israel , I just read an article about 2 twins that were born 8 years ago at the 29 to october and they celebrate every year at the 28 to october when there is no 29 to october available. When they have the 29 to october , their family celebrates their birthday for a whole week to compensate the years they didn't really celebrate. I think the twins are just spoiled too much.

That's still cool. Celebrating your birthday for a week means you're really loved. Anyways, thank you for the info. I think it is based on your country's custom I think.

I have heard they let the parents choose either Feb 28 or March 1 as the birth date. I mean, just cause one day is not in the year's length, doesn't mean you don't age if born on that date. Kind of like the time change twice every year...where does that hour come and go when you turn clock back and forth? And Once a year you have one day with only 23 hours in it and one day with 25 hours in it. What if you are born in that 25th hour and they change the day of the time change like they did while back? You don't have a birthday until they change it back? No one has ever mentioned this delima before! Give that one some thought!

I am not sure if this is an international standard but according to the Customs' regulation in my country, those who are born on Feb 29 will count their age on Mar 1. You might ask for your friend to check with the counterpart in her country.

Does that make it the law? Surely the parents or the child themselves when they get older should have some kind of choice in the matter? And may I ask which country you are in?

I'm from the Philippines. I know someone who is celebrating every February 28 and I heard from a friend of mine that her friend celebrate her's on March 1. I'm just asking if there is a law or something.

oh, so it is based on each country. I thought there is a universal law or something about this. It's kind of complicated I think.

I assume that if you are born on Febr 29 you do celebrate your birthday no matter what date it is. You are not just skipping it because some human beings invented an other time scedule (which is not the sun/moon anymore, which is the reason why once every 4 years we have some hours left over = 1 extra day). I never heard of anyone who only every 4 years add 4 years extra or just 1 year. BTW then it would be way easier to celebrate you are 1 year older each year on an other date (so each time 365 days have past).

February 29th is the day after February 28th, right? Yes. So in my opinion, people born on the 29th should just celebrate on March 1st for the other 3 years, as that is the actual day they were born (the day after the 28th). Although the whole concept is still a little confusing heh.

I do agree. It is very confusing. I guess we have the same problem after all. I hope they clear this up. I mean, I wish we can have a uniform way of dealing this problem.

I think that whose people are born on 29 th of february they are allowed to count there age in every four years. My friend Tom, who was born in 29th feb,1992. And we have cellebrate his birthday party not every years. I think that peoples are very lucky.

good day demibug, same as you are, i was also thinking how those people will celebrate their birthday as they are born on the 29th day of February. as i also remember the sister of my classmate, that she was born February 29. what her parents did, they have move it permanently to March 1 and never celebrated it on the 29th of February instead.

I think it is still counted. Well I am not sure about it but I believe they are not 3 to 4 years younger than the same people who were born the same year

In my own opinion ,they are not. They will count their age every year.If the calendar falls only feb. 28, then their bday will be on march 1 or feb 27. I t is up to them to choose which of that date given to me....

they are allowed to count their age every 4 years but their age must be called leap years old . If they want to celebrate their birthday, they will choose between 28 or 1 . However, we must note that a normal year has 365 days, meaning ,on the 366th day after feb 29,this will be the time to count formally their age.
